Holiday Overview

  • Spot the Big Five: elephant, rhino, leopard, buffalo and lion
  • Walk on the slopes of Kilimanjaro with your family
  • Ngorongoro Crater, Lake Manyara and Olduvai Gorge

This great family adventure holiday in Tanzania is a superb introduction into East African Safaris. On the forested lower slopes of Kilimanjaro, the highest peak in Africa, this holiday begins with a visit to the village of the agriculturalist Chagga people - providing a great insight to the culture. Transferring to the Rift Valley, our first game viewing is in the beautiful Lake Manyara National Park where we have a chance to spot lion and elephant. Next, it's on to the Ngorongoro Crater, one of the world's wildlife hotspots, where we have a morning's game drive amongst teeming antelope, zebra and wildebeest - and their predators, lion, cheetah and hyena. There is also a chance of seeing Rhino in the crater. Moving on to the immense and unmissable plains of the Serengeti we have 3 nights at a remote safari-style camp. In this game-rich corner of Africa, we have the best possible chance of spotting the 'big 5' of elephant, rhino, leopard, buffalo and lion. The for an insight into the origins of mankind, we will visit Olduvai Gorge en route to our final wildlife encounters along the baobab-lined waterways of the excellent Tarangire National Park. A family holiday that no-one will forget!

Is this holiday for you?

Suitable for children from 8yrs old

This is family adventure safari holiday in Tanzania, which necessitates spending some quite long periods of time in vehicles travelling and viewing game. Some of the roads can be rough, especially if it's rained. There are 4 nights camping in national park campsites, where tents will be erected and a full camping service provided, but please bear in mind that on these nights facilities will be basic. However, the feeling of being in the wild amongst the animals more than makes up for this!

Holiday Itinerary

  • Meet at the group hotel in Marangu. Transfers from Kilimanjaro International Airport are provided.

Rendezvous at the group hotel in Marangu. Complimentary airport transfers are provided for all daytime flights into Kilimanjaro Airport. We have a 2 hour transfer to the group hotel, which is a comfortable, modern establishment, situated on the south-east slopes of Kilimanjaro just a couple of kilometres from the Marangu Gate. KE Land Only package services begin with the evening meal.

  • Walk on the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro to a Chagga Village. Return to Marangu.

After breakfast we transfer to the Marangu Park Gate for a walk in the forest at the start of the climb to Kilimanjaro. In the afternoon we make a visit to a Chagga Village and take a walk around the local farms. The Chagga people who live on the southern slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro are predominantly agriculturalists tending their animals and growing staple crops and animal fodder. The traditional Chagga house was cone-shaped, with a thatched roof though modern dwellings are rectangular with cement walls and corrugated metal roofs. After our walks we return to the hotel in Marangu for dinner and our second night’s stay.

  • Transfer to Lake Manyara. Afternoon game drive.

Today we drive to the Rift Escarpment and check in at the Lake Manyara Lodge, located on the edge of the escarpment. The lodge offers spectacular views of Lake Manyara below and to the Rift Valley hills fading to the horizon. The Park is home to three distinct habitats including a lush groundwater forest, open floodplains and acacia woodlands, and has a consequently diverse ecology supporting tree-climbing lions, elephants and large troops of baboons. The Park is also home to an amazing variety of birds and its lush green jungle habitat makes it quite different to other parks in Tanzania. After lunch we have a game drive in the Park and then return to the lodge in time for the traditional ‘Sundowner’ as the sun sets over the Rift.

  • Game drive in Ngorongoro Crater, transfer to Seronera in the Serengeti.

Another early start to reach Ngorongoro and make the slow descent into the crater. The vast scale of Ngorongoro (Big Hole in the Maasai language) will become immediately apparent. Another observation which will be hard to avoid is that the crater floor is teeming with wildlife, from the thousands of flamingos in the shallow soda lakes, to the large herds of grazers on the open grassland, including wildebeest, zebra and buffalo. The crater also boasts several lion prides, as well as the very rare black rhino. Leopard are frequently spotted during the daytime, sleeping in the trees, and you are also likely to come across warthog, jackal, hyena, elephant several antelope species and hundreds of different species of birds in this natural amphitheatre. By midday, there is a real chance that you will have seen all of the big five. There are few places on earth where you can see so much wildlife in such a short time. Having packed a whole day into a morning, we drive to Seronera in the Serengeti where we stay in a tented camp/lodge.

  • Game drives in the Serengeti.

The Serengeti Ecosystem (of which the Masai Mara in Kenya is part) has the highest concentration of wildlife anywhere in the world. The southern Serengeti is where the wildebeest migration calves each February and where 600,000 baby Wildebeest are born over a 3 week period. Over the summer months (the dry season) over 2 million animals migrate north into the Masai Mara before returning to the Serengeti each October. We have a full day of sensational game viewing before returning to our tented camp/lodge.

  • Game drives in the Serengeti.

Another great day out in our specially adapted game viewing vehicles. Accompanied by expert trackers we will follow the wildlife. Our drives may be quite short or we may have to cover several miles on rough tracks to find the animals, but bouncing along through the grasslands and bush on the trail of big game is all part of the fun and experience of a real African Safari. This will be our last night in the tented camp/lodge.

  • Transfer to Tarangire National Park. Afternoon game drive.

We drive now to the Tarangire National Park. En route, we stop off at Olduvai Gorge, the most famous paleoanthropological location in East Africa where remains of early man, homo habilis, dating back 1.9 million years have been found. There is an anthropological museum where we can learn more about the world’s first human beings. We then pass close to the Ngorongoro Crater, before descending to Tarangire. Bordered by the Rift Valley to the west and the Masai Steppe to the east, Tarangire is a dry park with one rainy season in March-April. There are good game viewing opportunities along the boabab-lined Tarangire River, particularly for elephant, lion and other large plains game. We spend the afternoon in an adapted vehicle, taking up the best viewpoints along the edge of the river, with the possibility of seeing large numbers of elephants. The waterholes here attract lots of game and this is probably the best place to see lions hunting in the whole of East Africa. The park is also home to over 300 nesting bird species, which makes it one of the richest ornithological sites in the world. We stay overnight at the Tarangire Safari Lodge which is located on a ridge above the river.
