A Great Way to See Thailand
Bangkok to Phuket Road Cycling Tour
I'd booked this trip 3 and a half years before I actually went on it due to Covid delays. Anyway 2022 was the year of success and I finally managed to go and it was certainly worth waiting for. The 800km cycle goes down the length of the Thailand Peninsula, crossing over from east to west half way along, the west coast section is far more attractive, hilly and interesting. The cycling is relatively flat though there are a few short climbs. It is on a mixture of small county lanes, along the side of beaches, through coconut plantations and quite a bit (more than I expected) on main roads. I was surprised how much was on main roads, however the road surfaces were excellent and drivers were all incredibly considerate, so it wasn't a problem. It also gave us the chance to view Thai life at closer quarters. The tour leaders and the support team were all brilliant and very knowledgeable about the local area. The stops along the route for fresh fruit and local delicacies were much appreciated. It was very hot and humid when we were there, 35 - 39 degrees C every day and it was a fast group so it was certainly a challenging and rewarding cycle. Apart from one, all the hotels we stayed in were excellent and the food was superb with a real mixture of very small local eateries to bigger restaurants. The group was quite large - 16 but were all great company. I definitely recommend this trip.

Wonderful way of seeing Maderia
Self-Guided Walking on Madeira
This holiday was first class and we would highly recommend it. Having done guided holidays only we were a bit unsure about what self guided meant, really it means you have the best of being supported, routes planned, hotels sorted, luggage moved, highlights planned and if anything did go wrong you have a team in the area who can help you (we did not need them, but hugely reassuring). We were sent the routes a few weeks before both paper and gpx which allowed us to ā€œseeā€ what we were doing. W e did use paper in the main and occasionally gpx and we would absolutely recommend being able to do both to give comfort at all times. The weather in Madeira is very very variable, the sheer height of the mountains means that you really do get four season in a day so waterproofs are needed but in saying that we ate outside everyday in February but we were surprised at the variations in weather against forecasted weather as forecasts seemed repeatedly way off. The hotels on this trip were better overall than expected particularly the hotel Savoy Saccharum where we sat in the sky bar and watched the sun set. The Hotel Aqua Natura Bay in Porto Moniz was again lovely, they really did make you feel very welcome and both these hotels we would go back too. We booked extra nights before and after the trip and in hindsight the four days in Porto da Cruz could have been better if we had stayed Machico for 3 then moved to Porta Da Cruz simply because not much to do there. On arrival in Funchal after the walking I must admit my initial impressions were a bit flat possibly because I had walked 16 miles and ended up in the most built up atypical holiday destination, however I grew to love Funchal too (we had four days there) the open top bus was a great way to orient ourselves and we saved day sixā€™s walk to the final day and that was perfect as we were back walking in the levadas and then to walk through the botanical garden was again a very special way to end the holiday.

Outstanding support
Edge of the Sahara Trek

Outstanding support from our guide Mohamed, cook Lehsem and camel driver Ahmed. Always friendly, helpful and willing. Mohamed managed the team and group very well and treated us like friends as much as customers. Excellent food, beautifully prepared, amazing to see bread made on the fire. We were made as comfortable as possible. The snacks (dates, nuts etc) were delicious and full of energy! It looked like the camels were treated well.

Spectacular!
Mount Toubkal in Winter
Amazing scenery and journey there and back, challenging and fulfilling hiking, excellent food and staff support. The Mouflons refuge was very cold and it was quite a challenge to get a hot or even warm shower. Lahcem and Dross were lovely, kind, technically professional guides. They managed to communicate very well with our bilingual (French / English) group and supported individuals' needs very well. We will remember Lahcem for his calm and friendly leadership and for trying to make sure that e ach person in the group had the best possible experience.

Mount Kenya was superb, but Kilimanjaro was a let-down!
Climb Mount Kenya and Kilimanjaro
The Mount Kenya week was superb throughout. Everything was really good. Information says that there is a "predawn start". This isn't true. You need to be ready at 11pm for the summit start is 11.30pm the night before, which means that you only have about 4 hours rest/sleep after the long day's hike to Barafu camp/base camp and dinner at about 6.30pm before you start the Kili summit ascent. This was not adequate rest/sleep time for me and although I gave it my best shot, really pushing myself, I was not able to make it. If I had known that there was only 4 hours rest/sleep, I would not have booked this trip, so be warned. I was very disappointed and frustrated by being misled and it was the 1st time that I had not achieved what I set out to do. Hopefully, KE will now change their info package so people are aware of the real summit start time and can then make a judgment as to whether 4 hours rest is enough time for them.

KE Adventure reply

Thank you for your review Anthony. We are pleased to learn you enjoyed your week climbing Mount Kenya and of course, sorry that you turned back on the summit day on Kilimanjaro. We aim to reach the summit for sunrise which requires an early start as it is a 6 - 7 hour climb. We try not to be too precise about the start time as this will vary depending on the general pace of the group. Your guide will decide the appropriate wake-up time. A start around midnight is normal for all teams on the mountain. This takes advantage of frozen scree on the way up (much easier to walk on), provides the spectacle of sunrise from the top with Kili's long shadow stretching out across the plain, and most importantly, gets you back into camp in good time after a long, tough day.

Excellent short trek
Jebel Sahro Walking Holiday

We had a most enjoyable week with the excellent Mohamed as our guide. He was very friendly, helpful and cheerful, as indeed were our mule drivers and cook Youssef. All the walk timings were spot on, with very well chosen places for breaks and lunch. Nights at the start of January were very cold as expected but compensated for by clear blue skies during the day......just what we were after as refugees from the English rain. Do take copious amounts of very warm clothing at this time of year.

Another Canarian gem!
Walking Undiscovered Tenerife and Pico Teide
After a fantastic first visit to the Canaries in March 2022, I decided to check out another island for a bit of winter sun, walking and culture. This trip did the job and didnā€™t disappoint. The walking was varied from the heights of the Teide National Park, the beauty of the Masca Gorge and the lushness of the Anaga Peninsula. Unfortunately, we didnā€™t make it to the top of Mt Teide due to restrictions following recent snowfall, but our excellent guide Cao quickly identified an alternative ou ting in the national park for more stunning views of this impressive volcano. You do need to be prepared for all conditions; walking at heights of around 3000m is cold even on the sunniest days at this time of year and Anaga is green and verdant for good reason, so bringing rain gear is also essential. It was not all hard work. It was great to have some downtime on our free day to visit some of the cultural sites in the north of this diverse island. Laguna is a gem and rightly deserves its World Heritage status and, with our hotel located in a historic town house on the main street (my favourite accommodation of the trip), we were right in the centre of the action. There are plenty of bars and restaurants and it was great to check these out independently on the nights when dinner was not included. Public transport is extremely efficient and it proved easy to catch the local bus to Puerto de la Cruz for further sightseeing opportunities. Our guide Cao was great and a pleasure to travel with. His enthusiasm for Tenerife was infectious and it was sad that this excellent one-week holiday was over all too quickly. It leaves me with the difficult to decision as to which of the Canary Islands to explore next ā€“ Hasta la vista!

A trip through Africa full of surprises and delight
Cape Town to Victoria Falls Lodge Safari
This trip was so great. Our expectations were more than met but mostly every day exceeded the previous ones. Thereā€™s a lot of travelling in the truck but the passing scenery is fantastic and varied throughout - elephants crossing the road in Botswana thrilled everyone. Accommodation was varied with every place, whether tented lodge or bungalow lodge offering en-suite and ample space. This is not a 5 star cruise holiday! Itā€™s for those who canā€™t face camping but who can take a bit of campin g atmosphere. The local agents guides were excellent. They drive, guide, assure safety, good health and manage the operations of you getting the best from your holiday. By the end we considered it excellent value for money being all inclusive of transport and navigation, lovely accommodation, amazing trips, most meals with the best ones cooked on site by guides, entry to all national parks, game drives and local guides. Most of the route is wild but in tourist places and towns more extra cash is needed. You can use SA rand right up to Botswana and ATMs are available there. Zimbabwe wants dollars - and is more expensive. This was a trip we would not have managed to book independently. The route took us through destinations beyond our dreams. Driving was safe and excellent and the times on the itinerary for travel were generally accurate. KE were helpful with our preparation and we loved that we travelled with a multi national group who had booked elsewhere. Promises as stated re pick up, quality of accommodation, truck etc weā€™re accurate. Our luggage went missing but the local agent and guides did their best to recover it. Take enough necessities in hand luggage! It truly didnā€™t disturb our wonderful holiday. We definitely recommend this adventure. Deserts are hot, bush is full of snakes and scorpions, on the go toilets might be a bush. But it was SO relaxing and the small group got on like a family group, lots of laughter and tolerance ?. Animal sightings were great for the season and every photograph is a memory of a day that will live on for a very very long time. Thanks KE it was fab! Weā€™d have a go at more of your trips for sure.

A great experience
Vietnam from North to South
Nhan, our guide, was perfect. The trip was very smooth. It happened exactly as decribed. Vietnam is a great country to visit. The places we stayed at were clean and had good amenities. The food is excellent and healthy. The egg coffee from Hanoi was a delight. Street food is cheap and does not disappoint. The sceneries are breath taking. The schedule was very varied, boat trips, night train, temples visits and some more relaxing trekking. The museums were great, from antiques to more recent hist ory. I would definitely recommend this trip to anyone wanting to see Vietnam in two weeks. I would not have been able to see so much had I organised the trip on my own. Working full time with limited holidays I am glad I saw so much. Thank you to everyone who made this dream holiday happen.

One of the best holidays I have ever had
Vietnam from North to South
The trip was very well organised. This has certainly been one of the best holidays I have ever had. The quality of accommodation was great. I learned a lot about Vietnamese culture and history during the fourteen days. Nham is one of the kindest people I have ever met, and took great care of everything. Nham is exceptional in his knowledge and very generous and patient. He went above and beyond to meet individual needs. He has great people' skills and humour, whilst remaining professional at all times.

Excellent trekking holiday but room for improvement
Mount Toubkal in Winter
This trip fulfilled my primary expectations in that it gave me great first time experience of using crampons and ice axe when scrambling up ice slopes that I feel will stand me in good stead for future and more technical challenges on other mountains and I'd definitely recommend this trip to others. But it's not perfect. The holiday started well - the hotel in Marrakesh was good, a bit noisy outside but hey, it's Marrakesh not the Cotswolds, so you got used to it. At Ait Souka the Gite we stayed in for two nights was very comfortable but I'd question why we needed to spend two nights there at all when in my view one would have sufficed. KE would respond no doubt by saying that the second day was necessary for acclimatisation but the altitude was pretty low at between 2300m and 2600m so the day consisted of an 6/7 hour slog along loose rocks for no perceivable reason, but it was only one day so it's no big deal. The next day was a fantastic trek, leaving the loose rocks behind us, up to 3100m and the refuge, which serves as base for the two mountains to be tackled over the next two days. The refuge was surprisingly enormous and wouldn't have looked out of place among a collection of Swiss chalets. Inside however was a different story. The dorms were filthy and the place was poorly maintained. I know it's remote but not so remote that it was built in the first place so having filthy floor rugs, handles on toilet cubicles that were hanging loose from one remaining screw, unclean and damp mattresses etc etc is no excuse. In fact the standard was so poor that myself and another hiker paid extra at reception to move into a cleaner twin room that we found after a search of the building. Why weren't these rooms mentioned as a 'subject to availability' option in the trip details? Amazingly, the food they served to us was excellent. So if the building is there and they can produce fantastic food, then why overlook basic cleanliness and maintenance? Look after it and the people paying to stay in it. The mountains themselves were excellent trekking. Toubkal is a straightforward slog to the top and Ouanoukrim a much more interesting proposition with beautiful views at the top and great scrambling challenges near the summit, both led by a first class pair of guides, Lahcen and Driss, who looked after us superbly. So in conclusion, you won't regret doing this trip, it's (almost) excellent. Just be prepared to rough it more than should be necessary at the refuge.

KE Adventure reply

Thank you for your excellent review and recommendation Philip. You are correct that the acclimatisation day (and therefore 2 nights) at Ait Souka is critical for success on Toubkal. The Neltner refuge is operated by the 'Club Alpin Francais' and the influence of their customers on their policies is limited. For our Summer trips, we have the option of camping but the refuge is the only warm place to sleep for our Winter ascents.

The team were excellent
Jebel Sahro Walking Holiday

The team were excellent...and the food surpassed my expectations. Mohammed was a caring enthusiastic and cheerful guide. His estimated walking times were always spot on. He has a wealth of information which he was always happy to share with us. His love of the outdoors and pride in Morocco shone through. We felt like we were the only ones on this route.. it felt special.

Superb hiking trip with great variety of scenery
Jordan's Dana to Petra Trek

This is a fantastic trip. The hiking is not too challenging, but the scenery was very different each and every day. The food was superb - lots of fresh produce, and the guide and support crew both excellent. Arriving at Petra is a great reward for the hike. I combined this with the Wadi Rum extension after being persuaded to do so by a friend, and I'm really glad I did. This extension was also phenomenal.

Excellent walking holiday
Levada Trails and Peaks of Madeira

I did this trip in April 2022. It's an excellent walking holiday and very well organised. Our guide Nuno was exceptional. The views are spectacular and the flora wonderful. Lots of accent and descent on well made 'stairs' can be quite strenuous and the lavadas are not for those who suffer from vertigo. But it's all worth it! Very good accomodation as well. Thoroughly recommend this trip.

Fantastic hiking and a fascinating region
Walking in the Balkan Borderlands
This original and unique tour caught my eye and the reality did not disappoint. It would be difficult to recreate this tour independently and all the logistics and organisation was very efficient, allowing me to relax and enjoy the scenery. Kosovo, Albania and Montenegro have wonderful high walking country and the guesthouses were excellent and authentic. Our guide looked after us well and I enjoyed conversations with him about the history and culture of this complicated and fascinating region - a local guide is so enriching! The cultural stops were good too and I enjoyed the free day in Kotor. With a group there will be people with different walking speeds and I was frustrated to miss out on some of the commentary because I like to linger and take photos whereas the guide wanted to charge ahead. But that was my only frustration, everything else was great and I highly recommend this tour! I definitely recommend spending a day or so in Pristina at the beginning and Dubrovnik at the end.

Awesome winter trek up Toubkal
Mount Toubkal in Winter
Awesome trip, food amazing, guides awesome and caring, had a really good bunch of people who turned out as friends. Not as a negative just hints: No T Shirts or shorts on packing list need them it was 24 degrees in Marrakesh. For summit day poss take a porridge pot (just add water) and snacks, only meal on trip I felt was lacking make sure you donā€™t bonk !! Last night meal is reduced menu so donā€™t get excited, we ordered from main menu and paid difference also ask guide to sort a few alcohol ic drinks in advance as itā€™s a no alcohol restaurant. Found an awesome bar in main square 3 stories up with 360 panoramic views ace way to end the trip

Unforgettable experience, but seriously hard climbing
Hill Tribes of Northern Vietnam Cycling Adventure
We did this trip in Nov-Dec 2022. The first thing to say is that the cycling is hard. KE had graded this as a 6, but we have done a few KE trips before, including Jordanā€™s Dead-to-Red, which is listed as an 8, and Vietnam was harder than that, much harder. Because you are cycling on very small tracks and roads, the gradient is often >10% and sometimes this goes on for several miles. On day 3 we cycled 61 km, but climbed >2000m. In total we cycled only 466 km, but climbed 9553m. So, if cl imbing is your thing, this holiday is for you. The second point is the itinerary, which is often far too ambitious. On day 2 we cycled 110 km (on MTB hardtails) and arrived well after dark, too late to see the ā€˜pretty amazing waterfall of Than Ban Baā€™. On several occasions the group had to board the support vehicle (and still arrived after dark). The itinerary often suggests time in afternoon for exploring, but there simply was never any time for this. The lunch breaks were also quite long and ā€“if these were shortened a bit- you could get in a bit more cycling. The third thing is the weather. We were expecting fairly hot and humid conditions and this was certainly the case to the first 2 days, with temperatures of around 30-35 degrees. But on the third day this dropped to 7 degrees and we were all freezing. So, if you do this trip around Nov-Dec, pack for all conditions. You will need warm jacket, thermal base layers, bib trousers, winter socks, warm shoes, overshoes, buffs, gloves etc. The accommodation can best be described as ā€˜variableā€™; anything from comfortable hotels to very basic homestays. The first and last homestays were lovely and clean, the other 2 were much more basic with pretty unhygienic shower and toilet facilities Saying all this, we did have an awesome holiday. Vietnam is amazing and we really felt we saw the heart of the country. The people we met were all super friendly and welcoming. The homestays certainly provide a good opportunity to see how the local population lives. Itā€™s also good youā€™re supporting local communities. The countryside was beautiful with many stunning views. Our guide Shi and the support team were fantastic and nothing was too much trouble. Shi was very knowledgeable (56% of Vietnamese men are called Nguyen!), a keen cyclist and coffee connoisseur. One of the highlights was the Vietnamese food, which was truly delicious. However, as vegetarian or vegan you will be struggling as soon as you leave Hanoi. Rice, noodles and cabbage only gets you so far. And bread (or wheat) is simply non-existent. After finishing our last day cycling Shi took us to a spa bath + massage place in Hanoi, which was a great experience. It was also dead cheap and maybe should become of the program? The cruise in Halong Bay was a relaxing finish to the holiday, although this is much more a mass tourism experience. Some of us felt this could be made an optional extra. We have fed back most of the above to KE and I think they will adjust the grading. As long as the itinerary gets streamlined a bit, this will be a pretty perfect cycling adventure (as long as you like climbing and bring warm clothes). All together, a highly recommended trip and an amazing experience.

Back to the Baltoro - all change?
K2 and Concordia
Andrew's review of the August / September 2022 K2 and Concordia trek - below - is both comprehensive and evocative, but I can add a slightly different perspective. I first trekked to K2 in 1990, with KE, Baltistan Tours and the legendary Rex Munro. The 2022 trip was a chance to return with my son, who is about the same age as I was all those years ago. Some things had changed a lot; Skardu is a town, not a village with an airstrip, you can photograph bridges without fear of military interest and there are horses carrying luggage along the trail. However, the biggest difference is no doubt the road through the Braldu gorge to and beyond Askole. Not only does this cut almost a week from the walking, but has also bought noticeable improvements for the villages and people along the way. Although as we found this year, when it's washed away, you have to return to the old ways and travel by foot. One thing that hasn't changed is the scenery - I took many of the same photos again from the same places. It's a tough trek, even in the warm, dry days that we had this year, but the sense of increasing scale and remoteness is worth it. To spend time in Concordia again, with very few other parties, was particularly welcome. Bart did an excellent job of stepping into Rex's shoes for me, as did Zafar, who has taken over at Baltistan Tours from his father, who waved us off all those years ago. I'm glad that I had the chance to repeat what is probably the best trekking that I've ever done.

We really enjoyed this trip
Self-Guided Walking: Salzburgā€™s 10 Lakes

My husband and I really enjoyed this trip. We hiked 5-6 hours every day and then landed in another story book Austrian town. This was our third KE trip and our first self guided one. The hiking wasn't too difficult so it hikers of many ages could do it. We loved the solitude of the trails and the views from the top.
