Overview

This is Africa – it’s big and it’s amazing. The experiences that you will have on this holiday will stay with you forever. The grasslands of the Serengeti are vast, and seeing giraffe gracefully move on the horizon is a truly superlative experience. And that’s just the humble giraffe…

Our first taste of safari is in Manyara where the lions climb the Umbrella Thorn trees and the prolific birdlife offers us possible sightings of the silvery-cheeked hornbills. We then pop over to the Ngorongoro Crater, an Africa Classic and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Being three million years old and almost 20 km in diameter, the lush crater hosts a massive population of animals including lions, elephant, buffalo, giraffe and the endangered black rhino. We then continue to the short grass plains of the Serengeti National Park, the magnificent stage for the wildebeest migration, where vast herds of wildebeest including zebra and antelope come as they follow the seasonal succulent grasses. In tow comes the big cats looking for dinner! Our loop winds back and we have a final game drive in Tarangire National Park were we can see baobab trees and big herds of the magnificent African elephant.

This is a classic safari, and we stay in some brilliant tented camps and African lodges along the way. If it’s your first time or the fifth time on safari it’s always going to be different and always incredible.

Is this holiday for you?

Being a short trip this is a perfect safari for those who are short of time, but full of adventure. On this safari adventure, you will spend most of the time when out and about in the safari vehicle. There are long driving sections where the road is bumpy, and the driving is slow and it can be dusty – but it is really worth it for the wildlife experiences.    The accommodation varies from hotels, lodges, permanent tented camps to mobile camps. The mobile camp has proper beds and bush toilets (which are better than they sound!). Listening to the animals whilst in under sheets in your big tent is awesome. And the stars of the African night skies are truly amazing. Binoculars and patience to watch and appreciate the magnificent, beautiful and graceful African wildlife is essential!   Please note that we have indicated the normal pattern of the wildebeest migration throughout the text. With climate change and extreme weather these predicated patterns are no longer as reliable as they once were. Rain triggers the grass growth and the movement of the herds. Luckily we have the experience and knowledge to create the greatest chances of seeing it.

Why KE?

Excellent price for this classic Tanzania Serengeti safari. Staying in tented camps, hotels and lodges, and with an expert local guide – no quality is compromised.

This safari promises to be a trip of a life-time. Additionally it’s short and sweet, just one week off and you’ll feel like you’ve been away for an age – perfect for those who are short of time but full of adventure.

After breakfast we set off on the 2 hour drive to Manyara National Park. From the main gates the road winds through a luxurious forest where we can see groups of a hundred or more baboons just by the roadside. Blue Monkeys climb in the old acacia trees and the bushbucks (small antelope) quietly pace through the shade of the forest. You will hear the silvery-cheeked hornbills cackling and calling away to each other in the canopy. We enjoy our picnic lunch under the shade of an Umbrella Thorn tree. The park is famous for the lions who climb and sleep in these trees, so we choose our tree wisely! In the park we might also get our first sightings of elephants, buffalo, zebra, wildebeest and giraffe. Our first day on safari is a great introduction of things to come!

We leave the park gates and drive for under an hour to our accommodation for the night, in Karatu on the edge of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. This places us in a good position for the adventure tomorrow.

After breakfast we head off towards the Ngorongoro Crater where we discover the wonders of this very special conservation area. This ancient volcanic crater is 20km wide and its high sides create a bowl where the wildlife congregate. The big five are present here, but we have to work hard and be lucky to see them all. However it is plentiful with wildlife and we'll get some good sightings.

Hippos and buffalo are often found bathing in the mud at the Ngoitotitok pond and seasonally on Lake Magadi great flocks of flamingos are found. We will find a good spot for our picnic lunch, maybe watching some of the 500 bird species that can be found here. Our guide will be able to tell us endless stories about the wildlife and how the ecosystem here revolves. From dung beetle to elephant they are experts.

In the afternoon we say goodbye to the crater and head off along the 'main' road in the direction of the Serengeti. We overnight at Ndutu, which is just on the boundary of the Serengeti National Park and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. You will start to see to the famous plains of the grasslands. A cool drink on arrival and we'll de-dust ourselves before our dinner.

Please note that from December to March we stay in our mobile tented camp at Ndutu, and during the rest of the year we will be in the lodge here at Ndutu.

The migration is usually in this area through January to March and their calves are normally born during February.

After breakfast we depart into the heart of the Serengeti. This park is enormous, one of the biggest in the country, at 14,750 km2, which is a little larger that the whole of Northern Ireland. It's one of the best African National Parks, but so huge that you may be the only ones to witness a cheetah hunting its prey.

The famous Great Wildebeest Migration passes through the Serengeti in May-June, and it can literally be gridlock with wildebeest munching on the grasses. Mixed with the wildebeest are some zebra and antelope. And if we are lucky there will be one of the big cats; lion, leopard or cheetah waiting in the bushes to pounce, or eating its dinner.

Please note that from June to November we stay in our mobile tented camp in central Serengeti, and during the rest of the year in the Serengeti we will stay in a lodge. The migration is usually in this area through June and July.

To really submerge ourselves in the area we have another full day in the Serengeti. And you really need this to appreciate the sheer size, with vistas over the savannah to the horizons shimmering with green or yellowing grasses. These are almost as fascinating as the safari itself! After the rainy season, the golden plains become a huge carpet coloured with wildflowers.

Away from the migration the park has less visitors and just as much beauty. We can still see the buffalo, giraffe, zebra, antelope and big cats. We will seek out the waterholes where it is common to see herds of herbivores followed, in stealth, by the predators.

We overnight in our mobile tented camp between Jun-Nov (big classic safari tents with proper beds and en suite toilets) here in the central Serengeti. Sleeping here is a tremendous experience and hopefully you'll hear some of the wildlife during the night! During the rest of the year in the Serengeti we will stay in a lodge.

After some breakfast we make our way back. We enjoy some safari/game drive moments whilst we are departing the Serengeti on the road back to Ngorongoro. We will find a kopje or nice spot to break for our picnic lunch. Along the road we can see many Maasai people herding their livestock or busying themselves with everyday life. We continue through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and back to our accommodation in Karatu.

Back at our lodge we should have time to relax with a drink and maybe enjoy the pool before dinner.

Our last stop on this magical week is Tarangire National Park. The Tarangire River runs through the park, giving it a permanent water source. And the elephants love it here. In the dry season (Aug-Jan) there are herds of up to 300 elephants. The scenery is very different here with many baobab trees on the hilly grasslands, with a huge number of termite mounds dotting the landscape. The elephants like tearing off the baobab bark. We also find antelope such as the large eland, kudu, as well as the gerenuk and oryx which are not found commonly in other parks. Tarangire also attracts many birds due to its water source. This is a lovely place to finish our Tanzania wildlife safari.

We make our way back to Arusha and then the airport. We will stop at our hotel near the international airport for a shower before heading to check in. International flights from Kilimanjaro Airport should leave after 1700.

Return airport transfers from/to Kilimanjaro International Airport to/from the group hotel are provided for all passengers. On the last day you will transfer from Tarangire National Park in the morning. You should not book your departure flights to depart before 1700 from Kilimanjaro International Airport. We will stop at the group hotel near the airport for a shower and a drink before transferring to the airport for your flight.

If you have additional nights which are not booked at the group hotel then we can provide private airport transfers at an additional cost.

Hotel contact details and an emergency number will be provided with your booking confirmation.

All meals included from dinner on Day 1 to lunch on Day 7.

You will be fed well during this holiday. Breakfasts will include fresh fruits, cereals, and usually some form of cooked eggs or bacon. Picnic lunches will contain fruit, a sandwich or boxed salad and usually a drink. These are provided by our accommodation. Dinners are a hearty three course meal with a variety of vegetables, rice, pasta, potatoes, meats and vegetation options. We might try some traditional Tanzanian dishes and spices, but the majority of the food will be familiar to the traveller.

It is not recommended to drink untreated water from the taps. Water is supplied to fill up your individual bottles in the safari vehicle. This will be provided in large jerry cans or 5 litre bottles. Additionally you should take purification tablets or a filter bottle (such as a Water-To-Go bottle) to treat your water when in towns or where water is not supplied. We do not encourage the purchasing of single use plastic bottles.

Whilst we can cater for vegetarians, albeit sometimes with a more limited choice, we cannot always provide special diets.  Due to the nature of some of the trips that we operate and the countries in which we operate them, it can be very hard (and sometimes impossible) to cater for a wide range of dietary choices and you may have to supplement your diet with food/snacks from home.  If you have specific dietary requirements please do speak to our sales team and they will be able to advise you whether or not we will be able to offer your specific choice.  Please note that we are unable to provide separate menus and cannot accept liability for any problems arising from special dietary requirements or intolerances.

During this holiday we stay in simple, clean hotels, lodges, permanent tented lodges and tented camps. They have an African style to them with colourful traditional blankets, ornaments and smiling friendly staff. All accommodation has en suite facilities and 'proper' beds - there is no camping. Below is an indication of the places we stay, however please be aware that these are subject to change.

On the arrival day we stay at Moyoni Airport Lodge. This new lodge is perfectly situated near the international airport and with great views of Kilimanjaro. We also stop here for a shower, swim and a beer before our international flight on the way home.

In Karatu we stay for 2 nights at the Ngorongoro Forest Tented Lodge, which are classic safari tents on platforms with en suite inside and outside showers. It's a very beautiful place with great views of the green forest. The lodge has a swimming pool and a large dining and relaxing area.

In Ndutu from April to November we stay at Ndutu lodge, which has individual thatched stone cottages. Most evenings they have a campfire to sit around outside. Bliss under the African skies. From December to March we stay in our mobile safari camp, which has moved from the Serengeti to Ndutu for this period.

In the central Serengeti from June to November we stay in a mobile safari camp. These are classic safari tents with proper beds, and a toilet and a shower. The large main tent has a small bar, a dining table, proper chairs and sofas - it's very pleasant. The beauty of this mobile camp is that you are not surrounded by other tourists, and you can truly experience the sounds of Africa at night.

From December to May you will stay in the Serengeti at Mbalageti Lodge, which is built on a hill giving great views of the plains below. The thatched rooms here are ensuite and are made from rock, wood and canvas. All have great views over the plains. There is a small pool for a cooling dip after your safari day.

All accommodation has mosquito nets provided. All rooms are ensuite.

If you are travelling by yourself, you will be paired up with another single client of the same sex. Single rooms are available for a supplementary cost. If you are planning on extending your holiday additional nights at the group hotel are available on request.

Group leaders are the key to any successful safari. On this safari, you will travel with a qualified and experienced field guide. In the vehicle there are also books on fauna, and one set of binoculars.

We estimate that a total of around £200 per person (or equivalent in euros/dollars) should be allowed for personal spending. This amount should be sufficient to cover miscellaneous expenses, including tips to local staff. If you are intending to buy expensive souvenirs, considerable quantities of soft drinks / beer you should budget accordingly (credit cards can be useful in this respect).

You can choose to take your money in pounds sterling, dollars or euros. Although small domination USD dollar bills (printed after 2009) are the best to have as foreign currency. There will be the opportunity to change money into local currency on arrival at the airport on arrival, and we advise you to use the facilities here. Credit cards are useful and it is a good idea to carry one in case of emergency, however be aware that not all lodges/hotels accept cards.

Your tour leader also works extremely hard to ensure that your holiday runs smoothly and that you are happy. We suggest you tip the guide $20 per day from all the people in one vehicle (max 6 clients). As in all cases with tipping, the final decision of the amount tipped is up to the individual.

Our holidays are normally designed with minimal 'down time' at the start of the trip, but having a day or two at the beginning will have the additional benefit of allowing you time to get over the stress of a long journey or travelling across time zones, leaving you refreshed and ready for your holiday. We can easily arrange for you to have additional nights and airport transfers.

For this holiday you should take one piece of luggage and a daypack. Please keep the weight of your main luggage to 15kg. You should bring a soft bag, such as the KE kit bag, as these are more suitable to pack in the vehicle. It is possible to leave clothes or other items not required on safari at the group hotel. For international flights please check your baggage allowance with your airline.

Please be aware that plastic/polythene bags are illegal in Tanzania. The law says that they are not allowed to be manufactured, imported, used or sold in Tanzania (since Jun 2019).

For each holiday there is a minimum number of participants required to enable it to go ahead. Once the minimum number is reached, the trip status will change from 'Available' to 'Guaranteed to run'. You can check the trip status for each departure in ‘Dates and Prices’ table. Other than in exceptional circumstances, we will not cancel a trip once it has achieved this guaranteed to run status and so you are free to proceed with your international flight booking and other travel arrangements.

The information that we provide is for UK passport holders. A passport with 6 months remaining validity at the end of your stay is generally required, and you should have at least 2 blank pages for each country that you visit.

It is your responsibility to ensure that you have the correct travel documents and visas for your holiday. Please ensure that you check for the latest advice before travel. For the most up to date information on entry requirements, please visit the UK Government website.

Visa Tanzania

UK passport holders do require a visa. The visa fee is $50 (single entry) and is obtainable on arrival or prior to departure online at https://eservices.immigration.go.tz/visa/. The online application requires a scanned passport photo, a scanned copy of your passport bio page and evidence of your return flight details.

If you are arriving into Kilimanjaro Airport, Dar es Salaam or into Tanzania via the Namanga border crossing, we advise you to get a visa prior to arrival as there can be long queues for visas services at customs.

For visas on arrival you require 2 passport photos for the visa, however we recommend you travel with 4 passport photos just in case. Payment must be in cash when getting your visa on arrival.

USA passport holders do require a visa. The visa fee is $100. It is advised to obtain this prior to departure, full and up to date information can be found online https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/international-travel/International-Travel-Country-Information-Pages/Tanzania.html

We (KE) require copy of the information page of your passport in order to make the arrangements in Tanzania. A colour scan must be emailed or posted to us at the earliest opportunity.

TRAVELLING WITH UNDER 18YRS

If the children (under 18yrs) with whom you are travelling have a different surname to yours, you should consider taking with you the child's full birth certificate. It is not a requirement, but some border personnel in Tanzania as well as the UK, may request to see it when travelling to/from Africa.

If you have a severe allergy please inform the KE office before you travel. We will do all we can to help, but we cannot guarantee an allergy free environment on KE trips. You will need to carry your own treatment for the allergy with you, as 'adrenaline auto-injectors' are not carried as standard by KE leaders and staff. You should inform your leader on arrival of your allergy, and let them know where you keep your adrenaline pen.

VACCINATIONS

You should contact your doctor or travel clinic to check whether you specific require any vaccinations or other preventive measures. You should be up to date with routine courses and boosters as recommended in the UK e.g. diphtheria-tetanus-polio and measles-mumps-rubella), along with hepatitis A and typhoid. Malarial prophylaxis are required. A certificate of yellow fever vaccination is required if travelling from countries with risk of yellow fever transmission and for travellers having transited for more than 12 hrs through an airport of a country with risk of yellow fever transmission. On holidays to more remote areas you should also have a dentist check up. A good online resource is Travel Health Pro.

The unit of currency in Tanzania is the Tanzanian Shilling.

There are essentially 2 main seasons. The dry season from May to October and rainy from November to April. However there is less rain at the end of December and January. It is slightly hotter during the rainy season, but generally temperatures are in the high 20 degrees C. When it rains here it does so in sudden enormous downpours, it is very localised and is over quickly (Unlike a consistent drizzly day in the UK). The end of the rainy season is otherwise known as the ‘green season’. The majority of wildlife give birth between February and March. The wildebeest migration will normally go through the Serengeti from November to June. It is a vast area and the exact location where the herds are depends on the rains and therefore cannot be accurately predicted from year to year.

As a reputable tour operator, KE supports the British Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office's ‘Travel Aware campaign to enable British citizens to prepare for their journeys overseas. The 'Travel Aware' website provides a single, authoritative source of advice for all kinds of travellers and we recommend that prior to travel, all KE clients visit the official UK Government website at travelaware.campaign.gov.uk and read the FCDO Travel Advice for their chosen destination. North Americans can also check out the U.S. Department of State website: www.travel.state.gov for essential travel advice and tips.

KE treat the safety and security of all clients as the most important aspect of any trip we organise. We would not run any trip that we did not consider reasonably safe.  Should the FCDO advise against travel for any reason, we will contact everyone booked to travel to discuss the situation.  We receive regular updates direct from the FCDO and are in constant touch with our contacts on the ground.  If you have any questions about government travel advice, please call our office.

KE do not encourage the use of single use plastic items. We are ensuring that our agents all over the world are working together to reduce the problem and educate those around them. We are leading by example in our KE office by reducing our plastic use.

It is an essential condition of joining a holiday with KE Adventure Travel that you have a valid travel insurance policy to cover the cost of medical treatment and to protect the value of your holiday in the event of cancellation.  When taking out insurance please ensure the policy you choose covers you for the activities and altitude included in your itinerary.
