The Kungsleden, or King's Trail, is Sweden's most celebrated long-distance trail. However, beyond its reputation lies a landscape that feels remarkably untouched – 425km of protected wilderness stretching through Swedish Lapland, 200km north of the Arctic Circle. Whether you're skiing and watching the Northern Lights in winter or hiking through alpine meadows alive with wildflowers and Arctic wildlife beneath the midnight sun, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime trail whatever the season. Our summer adventure, Kungsleden Trek – The King's Trail of Sweden, and winter adventure, Inside the Arctic Circle – Skiing the King's Trail, both begin in the northernmost village of Abisko, the gateway for these adventures to one of Europe's last great wildernesses.

Our Kungsleden Trek – The King's Trail of Sweden showcases Swedish Lapland at its most vibrant during the summer months. As the snow retreats, the landscape comes to life with birch forests, glacier valleys and cascading waterfalls, while reindeer graze freely across the fells under the watchful eye of the indigenous Sámi people. Along the trail, you may spot colourful alpine wildflowers, golden eagles soaring overhead and, if you're lucky, the tracks of bears, lynx or wolverines.

There is also the option to summit Kebnekaise (2,096m), Sweden's highest mountain, via the Western Route, on the last walking day of the itinerary. From the summit, sweeping views stretch across the vast wilderness of Swedish Lapland, following the sinuous snow ridge to the rocky northern peak and across to the dramatic mountains that form the Norwegian border.

Rather than simply admiring the landscapes, you’ll experience life within them during the summer months. You’ll be able to refresh in crystal-clear icy streams after a post-walk sauna (not for the faint hearted!), soothe your tired feet in the rivers that flow alongside the trail and spend your evenings in remote mountain huts run by the Swedish Tourist Association.

With no roads, shops or modern conveniences along much of the route, life on the trail is beautifully simple. You'll carry everything you need in a 50–60L backpack, including food that you'll prepare together with your walking group each evening. And yes, there's no Wi-Fi. Kungsleden is a true back-to-basics adventure that is so special because it reconnects you with nature, your fellow trekkers and the simple pleasures of life on the trail.

Our Inside the Arctic Circle – Skiing the King's Trail adventure reveals Swedish Lapland at its most magical during the winter months. Beneath a blanket of snow, the landscape is transformed into a world of snow-covered mountains and frozen waterfalls and lakes, with the chance to witness the Northern Lights in the Arctic sky.

Just as it has been for generations, Nordic skiing remains the traditional way to travel from hut to hut along the Kungsleden, gliding through Arctic wilderness. Unlike the summer trek, you'll be able to cut straight across frozen lakes and marshes, making the total distance shorter in some sections. Your journey concludes at Kebnekaise Mountain Station, before a snowmobile transfer provides a memorable ride back across the frozen surface of Ladtjo Lake.

Like the summer adventure, you'll do far more than simply admire the landscapes – you'll become immersed in it with evenings spent in many of the same remote mountain huts. With no Wi-Fi again, the winter King’s Trail offers the same rewarding digital detox. Unlike the summer trek, you'll carry only a personal day pack while your main luggage is transported by snowmobile, allowing you to focus entirely on the experience. And if conditions are on your side, you may even be rewarded with the unforgettable sight of the Northern Lights illuminating the Arctic sky.
