Zimbabwe is a landlocked country in Southern Africa which borders Botswana to the west, Zambia to the northwest, Mozambique to the east and South Africa to the south. The capital is Harare which lies in the north east of the country. The border with Zambia follows the Zambezi River and famously Victoria Falls. The government owned national and regional parks cover 13% of the landmass, which is protected and managed for conservation and wildlife. In the 1880’s white colonists arrived and later it became known as Southern Rhodesia and then a British colony. In the 1970s there was guerrilla war, and then in 1980 Zimbabwe was declared independent with Robert Mugabe as prime minister. In 2000 squatters seized the white owned farms in a violent campaign to reclaim what was stolen by settlers. In the years following this there is food shortages, violence, economic disaster and sanctions. Since 2013 the political situation has calmed down and tourism is returning.
