Trails of the Levant: walking in Jordan, Turkey and Lebanon

“Huge vistas from high balcony routes & incredible canyon trekking. Petra was magic & especially with the walk into the huge site via the “back door”. Amazing trek food (vegetarians too!), the best I have had in over 30 years of worldwide trekking.”
John from Telford, Dana to Petra Trek

THE JORDAN TRAIL

We’ve picked the most dramatic and beautiful section of the Jordan Trail – Dana to Petra – for a journey by foot on ancient Bedouin trails at the edge of the Great Rift Valley. You’ll trek for six continuous days through rugged wadis of sculpted sandstone, climbing gradually from 300 to 1,100 metres at the high viewpoint above Petra. Full baggage support is on hand and each night you’ll bed down in traditional Bedouin style after dinner round the campfire. The trail alone would be highlight enough, but the finale, at the Rose-Red City of Petra, is justifiably one of the ‘New7Wonders’ of the World. Walking into the site through the deserted ‘back door’ is an unforgettable way to make your entrance.

THE LYCIAN WAY

The show-stopper trail of the Eastern Mediterranean, there’s no way the Lycian Way won’t seduce you. You’ll walk beside the seas of the Turquoise Coast, on ancient trails through meadows of thyme, where tortoises move slowly in the sun with Lycian ruins at every turn. The coastline is dotted with charming traditional fishing villages and there’ll be plenty of time for swimming in quiet coves. We’ve also included a boat trip over the fantastical Lycian sunken city of Kekova. We’ve chosen family-run guesthouses because we can’t think of anything better after a day’s walking than a friendly welcome and a mouth-watering traditional Turkish dinner.

THE LEBANON MOUNTAIN TRAIL

Our route, following ancient tracks through Mediterranean mountains, winds its way to the Shouf Cedar Nature Reserve, where you can stroll through the cedars, claimed to be thousands of years old, and keep a keen eye out for striped hyena, jungle cats, hoopoes, bee-eaters and wolves. We always like to take in a summit, so we’ve put in a detour for a trek to the lofty heights of the Black Peak, Qurnat as Sawda, the highest point in Lebanon at 3088m. Plus we couldn’t let you miss the early Maronite troglodyte monasteries in the Qadisha Valley, or tasting the finest wine of the Levant at Chateau Ksara. Vibrant and magnificent in every way, Lebanon packs a true adventure punch.
