Thailand had been on Andy’s family’s radar for a while, and Andy, his wife and two daughters knew they wanted to see more than just the beaches. When they started exploring the country together and alongside other like-minded families, that they realised just how much there was to discover.

From trekking in the remote north of Thailand, to exploring local sights and experiencing everyday life in Thailand, no two days were quite the same, filled with moments that the whole family could enjoy together.

From the excitement of trying new activities to the quieter moments spent taking in the scenery, Andy captured it all along the way and has shared with us his favourite momories from their adventure, alongside the photos that bring KE's Family Thailand Adventure to life.

Cooking class in Chiang Mai

Our family adventure began with a cooking class, this was a wonderfully chilled way to start our holiday after a full travel day the day before. We learned how to cook all sorts of tasty dishes from scratch including pad thai, and tom yum soup, but the girls favourite was definitely the mango sticky rice!

Trekking to the Karen Hilltribe village

We had three days on trek where we learned all about the Karen Hilltribe people and how they use their forest larder of foods, fruits and medicines. Sapi, one of our hilltribe guides, even showed us how to blow bubbles and make loud banging noises with leaves from the trees, and Montrey made some spinning tops for us to play with from these huge round seeds. We swam in waterfalls and shared delicious homecooked food at the beautiful homestays each evening.

Muay Thai kickboxing

Muay Thai kickboxing was sooo much fun! We all enjoyed letting off some steam, and had a proper workout. Lucy particularly enjoyed getting stuck in, and by the end of the session was throwing some fierce kicks and punches! The coaches helped us to improve our moves and encouraged us into some Mortal Kombat style games where if we got the combination of kicks and punches right they would hilariously spin out or fall over like a defeated adversary!

Chang Chill Elephant Sanctuary

We visited an elephant sanctuary which should be a benchmark for how a sustainable and hands off, animal positive tourist experience should be run. We met each of the rescued elephants whilst walking through the forest and were all in quiet awe as they moved silently through their ample habitat. One particular highlight was preparing their afternoon snack of chopped sugar canes and then watching them come down to eat from the feeding tubes that we had helped to fill.

Bangkok cycle tour

The Bangkok cycle tour was a brilliant way to cover lots of ground and see beyond the tourist highlights of this gigantic mega city. We disappeared down tiny alley ways and through bustling flower markets, emerging on the high street of Chinatown where we paused for family photos. It was surreally calm despite being in the middle of the crowded city with traffic and people quietly moving all around us, just epic.

Koh Samet

At the end of our adventure we were driven out to the coast to board a ferry to the island paradise of Koh Samet. We stayed in a perfect hotel with wonderful garden cottage rooms, several pools, restaurants and direct beach access. We watched a fire show one evening and enjoyed wandering into the back streets beyond the resort for an excellent final night meal together too.
