Today we will head into the Guatemalan highlands to visit the vibrant Chichicastenango Market, one of Latin America's most colourful and authentic indigenous markets. Held on Thursdays and Sundays, this bustling market offers a kaleidoscopic array of textiles, pottery, traditional crafts, and fresh produce. Your guide will lead you through the lively stalls, helping you discover unique souvenirs and experience the heart of Mayan trade and culture. Chichicastenango, with its misty cobbled streets and colonial architecture adding to its mystical charm, captures a world that feels a step away from the bustle of modern life. You will have some free time to explore in the afternoon before we head back to our lakeside hotel for a second night.

Today we will take a boat across Lake Atitlan to hike the shapely San Pedro at 3040 metres, which can be viewed from our hotel. The path is steep in places as it winds its way, firstly through a large plantation of coffee and then between cornfields, before entering thick cloud forest. The rock stack on the summit of San Pedro is the perfect picnic spot at approximately 3040 meters and provides a superb view of the truly beautiful lake and towns below.' After lunch we descend back down the volcanic slopes to the lake shore where we will meet our boat transfer for the journey back across the lake to enjoy a final night and well-earned rest at our hotel.

Today, we'll start the morning with a leisurely breakfast before heading out onto the water. From the dock, we board a boat to Tzununa, where our kayaking adventure begins. Paddling westward along the northern shore of Lake Atitlán, we glide past villages perched dramatically on the lakeside cliffs. After about two hours of gentle paddling, we'll pause at a safe spot to enjoy a refreshing swim in the lake.

Continuing on, we eventually reach the village of San Marcos La Laguna, where we leave our kayaks behind and set out on foot. The lakeside hiking trail winds its way between villages, offering spectacular views of the San Pedro, Tolimán, and Atitlán volcanoes. After roughly an hour and a half of easy hiking, we return to Tzununa, concluding today's activity.

Today our journey us from the colonial beauty of Antigua to the ancient wonders of the Petén jungle. Our day begins with an early transfer to the airport for the scenic flight to the colourful island town of Flores. Upon arrival, we continue directly to the legendary Mayan city of Tikal, one of the largest and most powerful urban centres of the ancient Maya world.

At Tikal, we will explore the towering pyramids and temples that rise dramatically above the jungle canopy, some over 200 feet tall. As howler monkeys echo through the rainforest, our guide will share the fascinating history of this UNESCO World Heritage Site-its role as a political, religious, and economic hub, its monumental architecture, and the mysteries still being uncovered by archaeologists today. We'll explore grand plazas, ceremonial platforms, and stelae carved with intricate hieroglyphics that reveal the stories of Maya rulers and dynasties.

In the late afternoon, we transfer to our hotel in Flores, a charming island town with narrow cobblestone streets, brightly painted houses, and a relaxed lakeside atmosphere. With its lively cafés, craft shops, and panoramic views over Lake Petén Itzá, Flores offers the perfect blend of history and tranquility.

Today, you will embark on a road trip across northern Guatemala, traveling through the Alta Verapaz region. The journey offers a gradual transition in scenery, from open countryside to the densely forested, green hills characteristic of this area. A planned stop near Cobán City allows time to stretch and enjoy lunch before continuing on the route.

As the journey progresses, the roads become less developed, with rougher surfaces and increasing remoteness, leading toward Lanquín. This small mountain town serves as the base for the final stage of your trip.

Accommodations are provided in a glamping site set within the surrounding forest, offering both comfort and immersion in the natural environment. Dinner is available on-site, providing an opportunity to rest and prepare for the following day's activities.

Today we embark on an unforgettable day trip to Semuc Champey, one of Guatemala's most breathtaking natural wonders. Famous for its cascading turquoise pools, lush jungle surroundings, and dramatic limestone formations, this hidden gem promises a day full of beauty and adventure.

Our day begins with a hearty breakfast and a quick overview of the itinerary, before heading off in our truck for a scenic drive through the Guatemalan countryside.

Upon arrival at Semuc Champey, we'll have a brief chat about what to expect on our journey to the pools. From here, the group can choose to hike up to the iconic mirador (viewpoint) or head straight to the pools to relax and swim. For those who want the full experience, we highly recommend the hike. This moderate trek, taking about 1 to 1.5 hours, leads to El Sumidero, where the powerful Cahabón River dramatically disappears beneath a natural limestone bridge. Along the way, we'll witness various natural features including waterfalls, jungle paths, and panoramic views.

After the hike, we make our way to the pools for a well-deserved swim and spend some free time relaxing in this natural paradise. The crystal-clear water, surrounded by lush vegetation, makes for a perfect refreshing break. Afterwards, we hike onto a private picnic area right on the banks of the Cahabón River. Here, we'll enjoy a delicious lunch, surrounded by the sights and sounds of the jungle.

After lunch, we'll take a short hike to visit the Semuc Champey waterfall, offering one final chance to admire the raw power and beauty of the river before we begin our journey back to our overnight accommodation.

Today we have a long drive of 7.5 to 9 hours back to Guatemala City. We'll break the journey after around 2.5 to 3 hours with a guided hike through the Biotopo del Quetzal, a protected nature reserve located in the lush highlands of Baja Verapaz. This sanctuary was established specifically to preserve the habitat of the resplendent quetzal, Guatemala’s national bird and a sacred symbol in ancient Mayan culture. Revered for its vibrant emerald and crimson plumage and long, flowing tail feathers, the quetzal is both elusive and breathtaking - a true treasure of the cloud forest.

As we walk along the mist-shrouded trails, enveloped by towering trees draped in moss and orchids, keep your eyes and ears open not only for the quetzal but also for a wide array of other wildlife, including hummingbirds, toucans, howler monkeys, and countless species of butterflies. The forest itself is alive with dense, tropical vegetation - ferns, bromeliads, and towering hardwoods that thrive in the cool, humid climate created by near-constant cloud cover.

After soaking in the serene atmosphere and natural wonders of the Biotopo, we’ll continue our return journey to Guatemala City, enjoying the changing scenery as we descend from the highlands. On arrival we'll settle in for our final evening in the capital, with time to reflect on the unforgettable experiences and diverse landscapes that have made this journey so special.

Drinking Water

It is not recommended to drink untreated water from the taps. If you are on a trekking or cycling holiday, water is supplied to fill up your individual bottles. This will be boiled, filtered or provided in large jerry cans or 5 litre bottles. Additionally you should take purification tablets or a filter bottle (such as a Water-To-Go bottle) to treat your water when in towns or where water is not supplied. We do not encourage the purchasing of single use plastic bottles.

Whilst we can cater for vegetarians, albeit sometimes with a more limited choice, we cannot always provide for special diets.  Due to the nature of some of the trips that we operate and the countries in which we operate them, it can be very hard (and sometimes impossible) to cater for a wide range of dietary choices and you may have to supplement your meals with food/snacks from home.  If you have specific dietary requirements please do speak to our sales team and they will be able to advise you whether or not we will be able to offer your specific choice.  Please note that we are unable to provide separate menus and cannot accept liability for any problems arising from special dietary requirements or intolerances.

We will stay at 4 star hotels for the 2 nights in Guatemala, 4 nights at Lake Atitlan and 2 nights in Antigua, ensuring a high level of comfort and service. We use 3 - 3.5 star hotels for the 1 night in Flores and 2 nights in Lanquin which offer a balance of comfort and authenticity, reflecting the unique character of these regions.

All rooms are en suite and allocated on a twin sharing basis. If you are travelling by yourself, you will be paired up with another single client of the same sex. Single rooms are available for a supplementary cost.

If you are planning to extend your holiday, additional nights at the group hotel pre and post tour are available on request.

A certified and experienced guide will accompany the group for the entire duration of the tour. To enhance the experience and provide specialised knowledge, local support guides will join the group at each location (e.g., Tikal, Lanquín, etc.). All guides are certified, have long-term experience and are trained in first aid.

This holiday involves going to moderately high altitude.  During the course of your trip you will reach altitudes in excess of 2500 metres.  Most people will have no difficulty with this level of altitude but before coming on the holiday, we recommend you read the advice on trekking at high altitude.  You can also talk to one of our trekking experts if you have any concerns about altitude.

A total of US $250 - 300 should be sufficient to cover your personal spending including tips for drivers and trek staff, miscellaneous expenditure on drinks, souvenirs etc. It is possible to use credit and debit cards to withdraw money from ATMs in Guatemala City and Antigua. This is usually at the best available exchange rate but you may be charged by your bank or card company. If you are bringing your travel money from the UK you should bring US$ rather than sterling and we recommend that you use cash rather than travellers cheques, since you will exchange the majority of this on the day after your arrival in Guatemala. The local currency is the Quetzal (named after the national bird). It is not necessary to obtain local currency ahead of your visit and you will have an opportunity to change money on the day following your arrival. US dollars are accepted as payment in most restaurants and shops in Antigua but not necessarily outside this city.

Tips are the accepted way of saying ‘thank you’ to your local guides and porters and do not form part of their wages. KE always pays local crews the best rates of pay, no matter what country they are in and any tips they receive are seen as a personal thank you from group members. For our part, we advise local teams that tips are not a duty or a prerequisite but are a bonus and entirely dependent on the service that was given.

For your guides and support staff we recommend that you give a tip if you feel that their services have met your satisfaction. We recommend that tips be given from the group as a whole and as a rough guide we suggest that a contribution from each group member of around $80 - $95, should provide a sufficient 'pool' for tips.

For each holiday there is a minimum number of participants required to enable it to go ahead. Once the minimum number is reached, the trip status will change from 'Available' to 'Guaranteed to run'. You can check the trip status for each departure in the ‘Dates and Prices’ table. Other than in exceptional circumstances, we will not cancel a trip once it has achieved this guaranteed to run status so you are free to proceed with your international flight booking and other travel arrangements.

The information that we provide is for UK passport holders.

A passport with 6 months remaining validity at the end of your stay is generally required, and you should have at least 2 blank pages for each country that you visit.

For other nationalities, please refer to your own Government website for the latest information.

It is your responsibility to ensure that you have the correct travel documents including vaccinations and health certificates (see Health & Vaccinations below), and visas for your holiday. Please ensure that you check the FCDO for the latest advice for each country visited before travel.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR THOSE TRANSITING THROUGH THE USA

You will require an ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorisation), and you must get this before boarding any US-bound aircraft or ship, or entering on a land border. The fee is USD$21 and you should apply for it at https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov/esta/. With the ESTA complete, the majority of British Citizen passport holders can enter the US under the Visa Waiver Programme, VWP. You will be required to have a passport with an integrated chip. Note that if you have travelled to Cuba, Iran, Syria or North Korea since March 2011* you will have to apply for a visa rather than the Visa Waiver Programme (* a full and up to date list of countries can be found on the US government website here.)

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR THOSE TRANSITING THROUGH CANADA

All citizens (except for USA citizens) will require an eTA (Electronic Travel Authorisation), and you must get this before boarding any Canada-bound aircraft or ship, or entering on a land border. The fee is CAD$7 and you should apply for it at http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/visit/eta-start.asp

Visa Guatemala

UK and USA passport holders do not require a visa for short stays.

Vaccinations

You should contact your doctor or travel clinic to check whether you require any specific vaccinations or other preventive measures. On holidays to more remote areas you should also have a dentist check up. You should be up to date with routine courses and boosters as recommended in the UK e.g. diphtheria-tetanus-polio and measles-mumps-rubella, along with hepatitis A and typhoid. In addition you should check whether any specific vaccinations are needed to the regions that you are travelling to. A good online resource is Travel Health Pro.

Malaria

Malarial prophylaxis is not usually required for trips in the mountains, however if you are visiting rural and remote low lying areas then they might be necessary.

Severe Allergies

If you have a severe allergy please inform the KE office before you travel. We will do all we can to help, but we cannot guarantee an allergy free environment on KE trips. You will need to carry your own treatment for the allergy with you, as 'adrenaline auto-injectors' are not carried as standard by KE leaders and staff. You should inform your leader on arrival of your allergy, and let them know where you keep your adrenaline pen.

The unit of currency in Guatemala is the Quetzal (named after the national bird).

It makes a lot of sense to spend some time before coming on a walking holiday, getting some additional exercise. The fitter you are, after all, the more enjoyable you will find your holiday. Although the overall grade of this trip is moderate, some of the ascents will challenge even regular hill walkers and it is a good idea to get in shape before heading out on your holiday. We suggest that you adopt a weekly exercise regime. Regular hiking in hill country is the best preparation but if this is not possible, then running, cycling and swimming are also good for developing better stamina and general cardio-vascular fitness. Before departure, we suggest that you try to fit in a number of long walks in hilly country.

From the middle of October through to the start of March the average daytime temperature in the high sierra will range from 17 to 25°C. Whilst in Antigua and at Lake Atitlan, temperatures are unlikely to fall below 15°C, even at night. At our highest camps, temperatures will fall to around 5°C at night. The time of year that we have chosen for our visits to Guatemala coincides with a mainly dry period, at least on the Pacific side of Guatemala. However, there is the possibility of showers in the afternoons when climbing the volcanoes.

As a reputable tour operator, KE supports the British Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office's ‘Travel Aware campaign to enable British citizens to prepare for their journeys overseas. The 'Travel Aware' website provides a single, authoritative source of advice for all kinds of travellers and we recommend that before travel, all KE clients visit the official UK Government website at travelaware.campaign.gov.uk and read the FCDO Travel Advice for their chosen destination. North Americans can also check out the U.S. Department of State website: www.travel.state.gov for essential travel advice and tips.

KE treat the safety and security of all clients as the most important aspect of any trip we organise. We would not run any trip that we did not consider reasonably safe.  Should the FCDO advise against travel for any reason, we will contact everyone booked to travel to discuss the situation.  We receive regular updates directly from the FCDO and are in constant touch with our contacts on the ground.  If you have any questions about government travel advice, please call our office.

KE do not encourage the use of single use plastic items. We are ensuring that our agents all over the world are working together to reduce the problem and educate those around them. We are leading by example in our KE office by reducing our plastic use.

It is an essential condition of joining a holiday with KE Adventure Travel that you have a valid travel insurance policy to cover the cost of medical treatment and to protect the value of your holiday in the event of cancellation.  When taking out insurance please ensure the policy you choose covers you for the activities and altitude included in your itinerary.

Galapagos Islands Cruise

7 Days

Create the perfect holiday-of-a-lifetime by adding an exploratory cruise of the stunning and unique Galapagos Islands

Needing little in the way of introduction, the Galapagos Islands are one of the most pristine natural environments left on Earth. Over 600 miles separate them from mainland Ecuador, meaning they have enjoyed splendid isolation and provide a habitat for a bewildering array of birds, reptiles, mammals and sea life you simply won't find anywhere else.

We have a variety of ships and itineraries and you can choose from two levels of service - Standard and Upgraded, many of which are more affordable than you may have thought. Itineraries are typically between 7 and 10 days which is the optimum length for visiting this natural paradise. During your cruise you will visit a number of the islands, each distinct and renowned in their own right. Sometimes these will be `dry` landings where you step onto a pier and at others you will make `wet` landings where you reach the island by small inflatable boats and step directly onto the beach. Every boat has a slightly different itinerary but all are focused on seeing as much of the amazing Galapagos wildlife as possible. There is also plenty of time for relaxation and for swimming and snorkelling from the boats. All of our itineraries begin and end in Quito and include the flight out to the islands.

Please contact us for details on availability, itinerary options and pricing. (Sample itinerary detailed below)

You might also want to consider our 10 day Galapagos Islands Adventure, for a more active and immersive experience of these diverse islands. This shore based trip stays in cosy small hotels and guesthouses, allowing us to experience the beaches and wildlife in the early mornings and evenings when the main tourists have disappeared on their boats. Alternatively, if you are looking for something a more luxurious why not spoil yourself on one of our Galapagos Cruises aboard the luxury Monserrat Motor Yacht.
