5 reasons why mysterious North Macedonia is a must!

When I found out I would be travelling to North Macedonia on our Off the Beaten Track Holiday, an air of mystery crept into my mind. Having never considered travelling there before, I wondered what the week and the country would hold. To put it simply, here are my Top 5 reasons why North Macedonia should be the top of anyone's list:

1) The obvious one - Mountains.

With 3 national parks and countless mountain ranges, you really are surrounded by spectacular views whether high or low. Titov, Medinica, Magaro & Golem Krcin promise to boast sensational views and if you’re lucky enough the clouds may part and allow you a glimpse over to Albania!

2) 'Off the beaten track' really means off the beaten track!

Once we arrived in the mountains, we only saw fellow trekkers on the trails to the summit of Magaro. Peaceful meadows and tranquil trails; you might even be lucky enough to have these all your yourself. Be prepared for the 6.30am starts, I can promise you that it is worth it!

3) A tip - make sure you arrive with an extremely empty stomach.

One thing that you will not do on this trip is go hungry! Three course lunches & 3 course dinners, in restaurants which have been handpicked by our ground agent in North Macedonia, you will definitely be prepared for a day on the mountain. Salads, meats, fish - no one will go hungry. And remember to wash it down with a nice cold Skopsko!

4) A visit to Ohrid is one not to be missed.

The lake, the mountains.. A beautiful city sitting promptly on the shores of Lake Ohrid, maybe one of the most picturesque views I have seen. To top off your stay in Ohrid, you will visit the village of Kuratica for dinner at Gorgan's home. Home grown and homemade food served alongside homemade red wine, never a truer word spoken when our guide told us that Gorgan is 'the Jamie Oliver of North Macedonia'. If you’re brave enough, there will be some Rakija to warm you up as well!

5) The history

Ohrid itself is said to have 365 churches, one for each day of the year. We challenge you to find them on your free afternoon! North Macedonia seeps history; churches, mosques, monasteries, Mother Theresa.. You certainly won't be bored by the end of the week!

If those 5 reasons aren't enough to entice you to the beauty of NOrth Macedonia, take a look at the photos, and take my word for it, North Macedonia is a pretty special country!
