Angela’s Four Favourite Highlights from the Lofotens
I recently joined one of our groups to the Lofoten Islands of Norway, inside the Arctic circle. It’s an area I have always wanted to visit after seeing some beautiful photographs many years ago and I was not disappointed. The scenery was awe-inspiring with huge rocky mountains jutting sharply from the sea around deep fjords, white sandy beaches and pretty fisherman’s Rorbuer accommodation. There are many great things about this holiday so I wanted to share with you my four favourite highlights.

1. The view from Himmeltinden

I saw many amazing views in the Lofoten Islands but my favourite was from the highest point we reach on this holiday, the south summit of Himmeltinden on Vestvagoy. We had a beautiful clear day and the view got better and better the higher we went, meaning I took far more photos than necessary! At the top there are far reaching views across neighbouring mountains, beautiful beaches and other islands. The route up is quite steep but I can assure you that it is well worth it!

2. The welcome by the Rorbuer hosts

The converted fisherman’s huts, or Rorbuer as they are known locally, were far nicer than I had expected. They offer cozy and comfortable rooms, usually with nice communal areas too. There are hot showers and wifi is available (unless you want to switch off from the outside world of course!) The Rorbuer are run by hosts and I was impressed by their customer service and how welcoming they were. It was lovely to be greeted by them at dinner time and given an explanation of what delights were to come for our evening meal, usually beautifully cooked local fish.

3. The boat ride on Kjerkfjord

We take a short boat journey up Kjerkford to the start of the walk to the beach at Bunes, and again at the end of the walk. The scenery is spectacular with large rocky mountains all around the deep glaciated valley. Some of these mountains look other worldly or something from a fantasy film!

4. A dip in the sea

The white sandy beaches and clear blue sea water are incredibly beautiful to look at. On a sunny day you might almost forget that you are inside the arctic circle and that the Norwegian sea might be colder than it looks! I would highly recommend being brave and going in for a swim, or a quick dash in and back out as I did! Even just rolling up your trousers and refreshing your feet is a fantastic feeling!

I hope anyone who joins this holiday loves it as much as I did.
