7 places to celebrate your special birthday

You may have a significant birthday looming on the horizon and rather than burying your head in the sand, why not think about marking this milestone with a iconic birthday adventure.

Trek to Everest Base Camp via the Gokyo Lakes, climb to the summit of Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest peak, or take a Polar Cruise to discover the unique wildlife in the Arctic and Antarctic regions. Walk the Inca Trail in Peru and explore Machu Picchu, or wild-camp on a Trans Kalahari safari expedition whilst keeping an eye out for the black-maned Kalahari Lion.

Whatever you choose to do to celebrate your upcoming occasion, take a look below at 7 different places, where you could mark your occasion with a once-in-a-lifetime adventure.

Take a once-in-a-lifetime Polar Cruise

Discovering the unique wildlife of the Arctic and Antarctica, is the most unimaginable experience. There’s just no way to explain the sheer vastness, beauty and peacefulness, of perhaps the last pristine and true wildernesses left on our planet.

Go north to sail through the islands of Svalbard in search of the Polar Bear, or head south to see the gigantic blue icebergs calmly float in the waters, and massive penguin rookeries abound as seabirds dive and whales breach.

Darran from St Ives who travelled on our Antarctic Hike and Sail Expedition, told us..."Nothing will prepare you for this experience. Icebergs, seals, whales and penguins, it is all laid out in front of you. Of the 7 continents I have visited this stands head and shoulders above the rest and the memories will be with me for the rest of my life".

Climb to the top of Kilimanjaro

Climbing Kili is the ultimate bucket list trekking adventure, and one of our most popular ways to celebrate a milestone birthday or special anniversary. Who doesn't want to say "I climbed Kili on my 50th"?

Trekking to the top of Africa's highest mountain, and one of the World's Seven Summits, is about as cool as it gets. We have a number of different routes you can take, including some that also summit Mount Meru and Mount Kenya in the same trip. We have a 95% summit success rate, and have been taking groups to the summit for over 20 years.

To make your trip even more memorable, you can also extend your Kilimanjaro experience with a Tanzania Safari experience to spot the Big 5, or relax on the white sands of Zanzibar. Just check out the extension tab on the trip pages.

Visit Jordan and explore the 'Red-Rose City' of Petra

From Lawrence of Arabia to Indiana Jones, Jordan has an exotic and exciting air to it from the off. It's home to the Dead Sea, the Red Sea, the magnificent Wadi Rum Valley and, of course, the ancient Natatean Rose-Red City of Petra.

You could celebrate in Jordan in a variety of different ways,  including our best-selling activity-filled adventure holiday for all of the family, so you can celebrate your occasion with the whole gang.

Trekking from Dana to Petra along the Jordan Trail, includes walking through gorges and over high ridges to the back door of Petra, whereas our Wadi Rum and Petra trek, explores the vast emptiness of Wadi Rum and desert mountains, as well as climbing Jordan's highest peak - Jebel Um Adaami (1832m).

If you are looking for something less active? Then Jordan's hidden trails gives you plenty of time to float in the saline waters of the Dead Sea, whereas our Ultimate Jordan Adventure is quite the opposite, packed full of activities including cycling along the Kings Highway, scrambling on to the iconic Burdah Bridge rock arch, descending waterfalls and cool canyons, and swimming in the salty Dead Sea.

Trek to Everest Base Camp in Nepal?

At 8848m, Everest is the highest mountain in the world, and the trek to Everest Base Camp is among the most dramatic and picturesque in the Himalaya, with eight of the world's fourteen highest peaks located there. The scenery is varied and spectacular, the lodgings and tracks are of a very high standard, and the interaction with the local Sherpa people is truly memorable.

There are a number of different ways KE treks to Everest Base Camp, and which route you choose really depends on the time you can spend in Nepal, and your level of fitness and high altitude experience.

Most people with a reasonable level of fitness can trek the linear Classic Route from Lukla to Base Camp and back, those wishing to take a more circular route and visit the Gokyo Lakes, climb Gokyo Ri and trek over the Cho La,  can join the Ultimate Everest Adventure. If you have some high altitude experience already and a good level of fitness, then you can tackle the high passes and challenge yourself on the Everest the Hard Way trek.

If you want an ultimate challenge, then why not train for the Tenzing Hillary Everest Marathon. An annual event that takes place each year in May. You'll trek up the classic route, stay at Base Camp for two nights and then run back down again to Namche Bazaar.

Trek the ancient Inca Trails to Machu Picchu in Peru

If you have always dreamed of hiking along the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, then, you are not alone! It is one of our favorite adventure experiences on the planet and hugely popular as a Bucket List adventure. There are very few trails where you can literally hike past 500 year old archeological treasures amongst some of the most beautiful mountains on earth.

We really do know the Inca Trail! We've been taking trekkers to Cusco and the surrounding mountain ranges since 1997, and our Inca Trail to Machu Picchu Trek has become a classic way to celebrate an iconic occasion.  Even KE member of staff, Vanessa Douglas took this trip as her honeymoon.

Machu Picchu is one of the ‘New Seven Wonders of the World’ and officially recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and is one of the most important archeological sites discovered on Earth.

We offer a number of different routes to get to Machu Picchu, whether on the classic Inca Trail route, Inca Trail and Beyond, the alternative trek via the lost city of Choquequirao or on our luxury Salkantay Trek.
