Coolest Places to Chase the Midnight Sun

Here in the Lake District, the summer solstice is one of those special moments that reminds us why we love the outdoors. Whether it's an evening fell walk that stretches long past dinner, a wild swim bathed in golden light or a visit to one of Cumbria's ancient stone circles, there's something magical about making the most of the year's longest day.

While we do a pretty good job of celebrating those extra hours of daylight, there are places in the world where the sun barely sets at all. North of the Arctic Circle, summer takes on an entirely different character. Mountains glow at midnight, wildlife roams around the clock and adventures continue long after most of us would usually be asleep.

If you're looking to take your solstice celebrations a little further afield, these are some of the coolest places on Earth to chase the midnight sun…

Norway

Thanks to its northerly position and large areas lying above the Arctic Circle, Norway is one of the best places in the world to experience the magic of the midnight sun. Here, summer days seem to stretch endlessly, replacing the familiar rush to beat the sunset with the freedom to simply enjoy being outdoors.

Norway is a fascinating blend of the dramatic and the peaceful. Tiny Scandinavian fishing villages, with their distinctive red wooden cabins hugging the shoreline, contrast beautifully against towering granite cliffs, soaring peaks and vast fjords carved by ancient glaciers. It is both a remarkable and deeply picturesque place.

Watch the fjords glow beneath the golden light of the midnight sun on our Norway: Fjords, Mountains & Oslo adventure or enjoy a late-evening, sunlit wander through your traditional Rorbu filled village on our Fjords and Fjells of the Lofoten Islands trip. As the light lingers far longer than we are accustomed to here in Britain, the mountains seem to take on an almost dreamlike quality, making every viewpoint feel just that little bit more special.

Whichever journey you choose, experiencing Norway beneath the midnight sun is something that will stay with you long after you've returned home.

Sweden

Like Norway, Sweden stretches far into the Arctic, with large areas of Swedish Lapland lying above the Arctic Circle. During midsummer, daylight lingers long into the evening and in the far north the sun never truly sets, bathing forests, mountains and lakes in a soft golden glow.

There is something wonderfully peaceful about Sweden in summer. Deep-blue archipelagos, endless forests, countless lakes and vast open landscapes combine to create a country that feels deeply connected to nature. Along the Norwegian border rise the Scandinavian Mountains, whilst further north the Arctic tundra stretches towards the horizon, offering some of Europe's most unspoilt wilderness.

Experience the magic of the midnight sun from the warmth of a traditional sauna on our Kungsleden Trek - The King's Trail of Sweden after a rewarding day exploring sections of this iconic long-distance route. Perhaps you'll spend the evening wandering through the flourishing Botaniska Trädgården on our Walk West Sweden – Island Hopping adventure, or watching the sea gently roll onto long sandy beaches during our Cycling Sweden's Southwest Coast trip.

Unlike many summer adventures closer to home, there is no rush to squeeze everything into the daylight hours. The lingering light encourages you to slow down, stay outside a little longer and savour every moment. Wherever you choose to experience it, Sweden beneath the midnight sun is guaranteed to leave a lasting impression.

Iceland

Although much of Iceland sits just below the Arctic Circle, its northerly location means summer days seem to go on forever. Around the solstice, darkness barely arrives, with long golden evenings and lingering twilight extending late into the night.

There is something undeniably magical about Iceland. Rich in folklore and legend, it feels as though it has been lifted straight from the pages of a storybook. Volcanic landscapes, dramatic coastlines and thunderous waterfalls combine to create a country that feels constantly alive, shaped by the powerful forces of nature. It's a feeling that is impossible not to share when experiencing these landscapes for yourself.

Enjoy the lingering glow of the midnight sun from a cosy mountain hut deep within the dramatic Fjallabak Nature Reserve after a rewarding day hiking through the colourful mountains of Landmannalaugar on our Laugavegur & Fimmvörðuháls Trail Trek. Or perhaps you'll soak in the warm waters of the Sky Lagoon on our Iceland Walking Adventure, watching the light dance across the horizon long after it feels like the day should have ended.

In truth, Iceland is so spectacular it scarcely needs the midnight sun to make it special - but it certainly doesn't hurt.

Greenland

Much of Greenland lies within the Arctic Circle, where summer brings extraordinarily long days and, in many regions, a true midnight sun. Here, the sun lingers above the horizon, casting a golden glow across icebergs, mountains and fjords long after bedtime would normally have arrived.

Vast, remote and shaped by ice, Greenland is one of the last great wildernesses on Earth. Towering granite peaks rise above fjord-cut coastlines, whilst shimmering blue icebergs drift silently through pristine waters. There are few places where nature feels so raw, untouched and powerful.

Experience the midnight sun from Camp Qaatoq, a remote mountain refuge set amongst this spectacular glacial landscape on our Icefjords and Remote Villages of East Greenland adventure. Or perhaps you'll find yourself watching the golden light illuminate the colourful houses of Kuummiut, a small and isolated community perched on a peninsula deep within the fjord system.

While we might make the most of a long summer evening here in Britain, Greenland takes the concept to an entirely different level. With endless daylight and some of the most dramatic scenery on the planet, it's a place where time seems to slow down and the adventure never quite feels like it has to end.

Arctic

Of course, we couldn't call ourselves adventure experts without including the awe-inspiring Arctic. If there is one place that truly embodies the magic of the midnight sun, it is Svalbard. Situated high above mainland Norway, deep within the Arctic Ocean, this remarkable archipelago experiences months where the sun simply refuses to set, bathing glaciers, mountains and icy waters in an endless golden light.

This is a place that feels almost beyond imagination. Vast glaciers spill into glass-like fjords, rugged mountains rise from the tundra and wildlife thrives in one of the planet's most extreme environments. Beneath the midnight sun, the landscape takes on an almost dreamlike quality, as though time itself has slowed down.

Witness the sun shimmering across Arctic waters inhabited by whales, walruses and seals on our North Spitsbergen, Arctic Summer adventure. Keep your eyes out for the king of the Arctic, on our Realm of the Polar Bear, roaming one of the last true wildernesses left on Earth.

Or perhaps you'll experience the midnight sun from your traditional wilderness camp in the spectacular Ymerbukta Fjord on our Svalbard Sea Kayak and Hike Expedition. After a day spent paddling beneath towering glaciers and searching for wildlife, there are few places more memorable to watch the endless daylight stretch across the horizon.

While a long summer evening in Britain feels special, Svalbard operates by entirely different rules. Here, darkness never arrives. The sun circles endlessly overhead and every hour feels filled with possibility. If you're looking for the ultimate place to chase the midnight sun, you've found it.
