El Hierro: Welcome to the End of the World

In 1493 a young Italian explorer by the name of Christopher Columbus stopped off on his trans-Atlantic voyage at a small island off Africa’s north-west coast. Not knowing what lay ahead, if anything, he declared to the crew ‘we’ve arrived at the end of the world.’ In those days the world was still flat and El Hierro felt like the last place you sailed before spilling over the edge. 150 years later it was given the name Isla del Meridiano by the French because of its location at the westernmost point of the ‘Old World’.

Half a millennium may have passed since Columbus, but this little-known island still feels a world away from civilisation and remains well and truly off-the-beaten-track. The islanders aren’t interested in mass tourism, infrastructure is very limited and with 100% sustainability just over the horizon, the result is a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve surrounded by a marine reserve. Anyone visiting El Hierro effectively joins a very special club who have discovered a little piece of volcanic paradise nestling in the Atlantic Ocean.

If you travel with KE, you’ll reach the island on the ferry from Tenerife which makes a stop en route at the island of La Gomera. Stepping off the boat, you can expect to have much the same ‘end of the world’ feeling as Columbus. Fondly referred to as the ‘little brother of the Canary Islands’ due to its age (barely a million years old) and size (smaller than the Isle of Wight) El Hierro has, nevertheless, a big personality. In fact, it’s the perfect place for a relaxed walking week on account of its climate, compact size and varied landscape; consisting of a dramatic volcanic coastline, rolling hills, timeless hamlets, colourful harbours and forest of laurel, pines and ancient, twisted junipers locally known as sabinas.

There are no frills or all-inclusive hotels, but this very fact, along with the island’s remoteness, is what makes El Hierro so captivating. Here, you'll have that rare holiday opportunity to slow down and properly explore a part of the world where time appears to stand still. Follow in the footsteps of one the world’s great explorers to this hidden gem of an island. Just don’t tell everyone....we want to keep this a KE secret.
