Five Ways to Trek Kilimanjaro

Confused which route to choose? After more than 20 years of experience guiding walkers up Kilimanjaro, we have picked the best routes to get to the summit. Here’s how to do it the KE Way!

1. Mount Meru and Kilimanjaro Summit Ascents (KAM)

Double up and maximise your chances of summit success by first climbing Mt Meru (4,566m), a dormant volcano visited by few tourists. This extra acclimatisation increases your chances of summiting Kilimanjaro via the challenging Machame Route.

2. Kilimanjaro Lemosho Route (KLR)

For a more remote experience, the Lemosho Route is a great choice as it’s the quietest and varied of all routes trekking across the Shira Plateau and Karanga Valley over 8 days. This is KE’s longest itinerary with the highest summit success rate.

3. Kilimanjaro Rongai Route (KRR)

The scenic Rongai Route offers easier, gradual climb through forest, farmland and open moor. As an aid to acclimatisation, we include a rest day at the idyllic Mawenzi Tarn Camp, beneath the imposing rock spires.

4. Climb Mount Kenya and Kilimanjaro (KAK)

This twin peak trekking holiday, aims to summit the trekker’s peak on Mt Kenya (4,985m) and Kilimanjaro (5,895m), and is the ultimate East African mountain challenge. On no other holiday can you see the sunrise from the highest mountains in both Kenya and Tanzania.

5. Kilimanjaro Northern Route Traverse and Circuit (KNR)

The Northern Route, one of Kilimanjaro's least walked paths, offers a quieter, personal experience. 9 days provide excellent acclimatisation before descending via Marangu, the shortest descent route.
