Worlds Most Remote Adventures

In such a connected World we want to arrive at the start of the activity as soon as possible. However, some of the most rewarding adventures are ones that involve endless days of simply travelling to get too. It is on these adventures that you find yourself removed from the well beaten tourist trail, and immersed in local cultures, scenery and traditions that few adventurers will ever experience. These remote adventures still exist and here are our top 7:

Mount Ararat

Nestled on the border of Iran and Armenia, but currently in Turkey, it takes a 2 hour flight and a 4 hour drive to get to Ararat from Istanbul alone. While you might be left wondering whether people can survive living this remote it’s an area with a deep rich history. Starting as a very prosperous Silk Road route it’s a real mix of cultures with a castles and palaces dating back centuries.

As for the mountain. Well, it’s no walk in the park. At 5,100m it involves multiple days of acclimatisation before a 0130 wake up for a summit push in temperatures that can exceed minus 20 and at the top you need to don crampons to make your way across the summit glacier. Mixed with the sense of remoteness, these challenging conditions only add to the sense of this being the ultimate mini expedition.

Ultimate Fann Mountains Trek

Tajikistan and Uzbekistan are far from tourist hot spots at any reckoning. However, we still a 2 day drive to the remote Fann Mountains. From here you spend 7 days exploring a land less trod. This is a massive mountain range, but a place where you’re very unlikely to meet another sole, other than nomadic Tajik shepherds who farm the remote upland pastured in the summer months.

Karakoram

We couldn’t do this list of remote adventures without going back to KE’s home, the Karakoram mountains of Pakistan. It might have been 40 years, but little has changed. It’s a 2 day drive to Askole, the highest town before K2 basecamp, involving 4WD off road vehicles along roads that can change after each monsoon.

The reward for this epic drive in; the most spectacular mountain valleys in the world. You are just a spec on the landscape as you are towered by the likes of Broad Peak, Gasherbrum and the infamous K2. This was the first KE trip, and we’d argue it’s now simply the best for those who want a remote rugged adventure to a place few will ever visit.

Lake Khuvsgul Dog Sled Adventure

If you think remote involves going high into a mountainous valley, to a place where there are few paths; then how about across a lake where the path doesn’t exist and melts away every summer? What started off as a one off expedition has turned into a customer favourite and for obvious reason. This is an adventure that will take you far away from civilisation as you know it. Sleeping in traditional gers (yurts) you’ll while away the evening around the campfire, hopefully cooking a fish you caught earlier that evening.

Bhutan

While we could easily pick out the Snowman trek as one of the remotest, and toughest, treks in the world, we really have to mention all treks in Bhutan. This is one of the worlds most closed off, yet accessible countries. Working hard to keep their traditions and customs, tourism is heavily managed to keep this spectacular country pure. Part of that is the time it takes to get to just the country, let alone the start of the treks and then onto the destinations.

If you seek a remote adventure to immerse into a ancient culture that has barely been touched by the Western world, then Bhutan is the place to go.

Botswana Wildside Camping Safari

Some Safaris have their accommodation in towns and cities, but that’s not the KE way. We like to keep ours out in the national parks, surrounded by the wildlife. However, this trip takes it to the next level. Over the 15 day trip, you’ll spend 10 nights at a camp deep in the Nature reserves, some of which are the size of a country. By doing this you immerse yourself in nature, there in the rawness listening to the evening calls and the dawn chorus, something you might not experience even in a hotel on a nature reserve.
