Overview

If you have a sense of adventure and a thirst for new experiences, this tour of the north-east states of Assam and Nagaland will not disappoint. Wildlife, natural beauty, historic towns and a wild and wonderful variety of colourful tribal people await you on this unique journey of discovery that begins with a 2-night visit to the Kaziranga National Park in Assam. We then cross the Brahmaputra to visit Majuli, one of the largest river-islands on Earth, home to tribal people and a number of 16th Century Vaishnavite (Hindu) monasteries rich in Assamese history. Then, from Jorhat, we’ll visit the Hollongapar Gibbon Sanctuary and the city of Sivasagar with its unusual and spectacular collection of 18th Century Ahom Dynasty temples. We devote the remainder of the holiday to Nagaland, a wild upland state on the border with Myanmar to the east. Our visit coincides with the annual Hornbill Festival which has its focus at Kisama Village where we can meet the various fierce and proud Naga tribes and hear some fascinating stories of their headhunting days! The Hornbill Festival is Nagaland’s premier cultural event and brings together the region’s tribes in a celebration of their indigenous heritage through colourful dances, traditional music, crafts, local cuisine, and sports. This holiday provides a rare insight into one of India’s most fascinating and least explored regions.

This touring and sightseeing adventure holiday to India’s north-eastern states of Assam and Nagaland begins with a short internal flight to the airport at Guwahati. From here, there’s necessarily a fair amount of travelling as we pick out the highlights of this fascinating and little-visited region. The roads are rough in places and we will be glad of our comfortable air-conditioned transport. There are two crossings of the Brahmaputra River on local ferries and two game drives at Kaziranga in open jeeps or ‘canters’. The holiday also includes some quite leisurely exploration of city streets, cultural sites and wildlife reserves on foot.

Day 1

Arrive in Kolkata. Overnight in Kolkata.

Day 2

Fly to Guwahati and drive to Kaziranga.

After an early breakfast, we will return to the airport to catch the morning flight to Guwahati, a city on the banks of the Brahmaputra River, the capital of Assam and the gateway to India's north-east. Once known as Pragjyotishpur - the Light of the East, Guwahati was named for its significance as an astrological centre. Before moving on, we can pay a visit to the Kamakhya Devi Temple on Nilanchal Hill. One of the main pithas (sacred places) among 51 shakti pithas, this temple is dedicated to Mother Goddess Kamakhya, who is a version of the Goddess Parvati. After this temple visit, we will make the 5-hour drive to the Kaziranga National Park. Dinner and overnight in bungalows at our simple wildlife reserve accommodation.

Day 3

Morning and afternoon game drives in the Kaziranga National Park.

This world-renowned park was the inspiration of Lady Curzon who influenced the British Indian Government of the time (1904) to create a reserve here. Extending over 430 square kilometres of grassland, marsh and tropical forest, the park was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1985. It is home to elephant, tiger, Asiatic water buffalo, many types of deer, as well as the endangered great one-horned rhinoceros, arguably the park's signature species. More than 450 species of birds have also been recorded. Kaziranga is probably India's foremost reserve in terms of conservation success, variety and accessibility of species. We will enjoy two exclusive game drives today in different areas of the park - early morning and then afternoon, with plenty of time for R&R in between. We spend a second night at our accommodation at Kaziranga.

Day 4

Drive to Nimatighat and take the ferry across to the river island of Majuli.

After breakfast, we make the 2-hour drive to Nimatighat, where we board the public ferry to Majuli Island. Depending on water levels, the river here can be more than 5 kilometres wide and the ferry ride can take over an hour. Arriving on the island, we visit the Auniati Satra Hindu Temple. This is a Vaishnavite temple founded in the early 17th century and dedicated to the worship of the Govinda idol (Lord Krishna). There is a museum here and we may see young monks practicing drumming or traditional dance. After lunch we drive to the Samuguri Satra famous for its centuries-old traditional mask-making. Fashioned from bamboo, cow dung, clay and cloth, these colourful masks, depicting various Hindu deities are used in theatrical performances. Later, if time permits, we can visit a fishing village home to people of the Mishing ethnic group. Majuli is one of the largest river islands in the world and has a population of 160,000 mostly tribal people who make their livings from agriculture (100 varieties of rice are grown here), fishing, handicrafts and boat-building. Overnight in bamboo cabins on Majuli Island.

Day 5

Morning on the island before travelling by ferry and road transfer to Jorhat.

This morning we will aim to get a further insight into the lives of the Mishing and Deori people by visiting a couple of tribal villages where the inhabitants live in stilt houses and practice a self-sufficient economy based on the farming of crops and livestock rearing, supplemented by fishing. We will see example of the exquisite weaving and pottery-making that these tribal people are known for. After lunch, we will drive to the ferry and return to Nimatighat on the 'mainland'. From here, it's a drive of about an hour to our hotel in Jorhat where, in the evening, we can go out to explore the local market streets. Overnight in Jorhat.

Day 6

Early morning at the Hollongapar Gibbon Sanctuary and a visit to the historical city of Sivasagar.

We have an early start and a short drive to the Hollongapar Gibbon Sanctuary. Here, within a protected area of evergreen forest there are around 150 western hoolock gibbons as well as giant squirrels, several species of macaque and numerous colourful birds. We will go for a walk (1 to 2 hours) on forest trails with a naturalist guide and a forest guard, before driving back to the hotel for breakfast. Mid-morning, we will set out again, heading north to the historic town of Sivasagar. Capital of the Ahom Dynasty through the 18th century, the town has several large man-made tanks or reservoirs and is home to many beautiful temples and palaces. We will see Rang Ghar, a unique two-storey amphitheatre built in 1744 and used for traditional sporting events and celebrations. We will also visit Talatal Ghar, an Ahom Dynasty military base with three underground levels. Next to the largest of the tanks, Sivasagar / Borpukhuri, there is a complex of temples dedicated to the gods Shiva, Vishnu and Durga and we can see these as we take a 2-kilometre walk around the tank. We return to spend a second night in Jorhat.

Day 7

Drive via Dimapur to Kohima (1400m) the capital of Nagaland.

After a relaxed breakfast we drive southwards and after 2 to 3 hours cross from Assam into Nagaland at the city of Dimapur. Here, we take a break to visit the Kachari Ruins, a number of mysterious mushroom domed pillars erected in the 13th Century by the Dimasi Kingdom which ruled in this region at that time. Then, after lunch, we continue the drive (a further 2 to 3 hours) to our hotel in Kohima, the capital of Nagaland.

Day 8

Full day at the Hornbill Festival at Kisama Heritage Village. Evening free to relax.

The hornbill is an impressive forest bird which is important in the folklore of the local tribes. Every tribe in Nagaland has its own culture and festivities which they celebrate with great spirit and the state government promotes the Hornbill Festival to encourage inter-tribal interaction. Our next two days are dedicated to the different aspects of the Hornbill Festival and today we go to Kisama village, just a short drive from our hotel. Arriving at the village, we pass a giant wooden gate decorated with buffalo horns and hornbill insignia. The festival is a riot of colour, combining food fair, traditional sports, handicrafts, cultural performances, music and dance. The major highlights include the Naga Morungs Exhibition (18 intricately constructed traditional huts) as well as song and dance performances by each of the tribal groups.

Day 9

Morning visit to Khonoma Green Village and afternoon at the Hornbill Festival in Kohima.

This morning, after breakfast we drive out to Khonoma, a small settlement home to the Angami tribe that is acclaimed as the first 'green village' of India. As long ago as 1998 the tribe set out to achieve sustainability and, as a part of this, set up the 20 square kilometre Khonoma Nature Conservation and Tragopan Sanctuary. We will have a tour of the village and its verdant farmed land, before returning to Kisama to soak up some more of the special flavour of the Hornbill Festival. We return to spend a third night in Kohima.

Day 10

Drive from Kohima to Mokokchung with a stop-off at the Ahom royal palace of Kareng Ghar.

Kohima has an important place in the history of the Second World War - a pivotal battle between UK forces and the encroaching Japanese Army took place here in 1944. Before we leave, we can visit the orderly and atmospheric cemetery where more than 1400 UK soldiers are buried. We can also spend some time at the colourful produce market. Today's drive takes us back towards the north through a lush farmed and forested landscape. We will stop off in Nazira, not too far from Sivasagar which we visited earlier, and stretch our legs with a walk around the Kareng Ghar, a royal palace of the Ahom Dynasty. After 5 to 6 hours driving we reach Mokokchung which sits at an altitude of 1350 metres in a picturesque area with a white-water river running nearby. It is the cultural centre of the Ao Nagas who live in the many surrounding villages and are famous for their colourful dances.

Day 11

Visit the Baptist church at Impur and the tribal village of Wakching en route to Mon.

Heading back towards the north-east, it's just a short drive to Impur where, in 1895, missionaries from the US built the first Baptist church in the region. We can check out this old wooden church before continuing our journey across a wild, hilly and forested landscape to the village of Wakching (1960m), home to people of the Konyak Naga tribe. At the heart of this sprawling, hilltop village is large Baptist church alongside the tribal morung or meeting place. We will have lunch here before driving for a further couple of hours to our simple hill resort accommodation in the small town of Mon, just 15 kilometres from the border with Myanmar.

Day 12

Morning at the Mon Hornbill Festival and afternoon visit to the village of Hongphoi.

The Konyak Nagas in this part of Nagaland have in the last couple of years established a Hornbill Festival at Mon to run alongside the state-wide celebrations. This 3-day event showcases the culture of the tribes in this area, with traditional dancing and cuisine, as well as handicrafts including woodworking, weaving and beadwork. We will spend the morning at the festival and then after lunch take the bumpy half-hour ride through the jungle to Hongphoi Village to meet some of the most authentic characters (tattooed and sporting traditional jewellery and headgear) from an era not so long ago when headhunting was a part of life in Nagaland. We will return to spend a second night in Mon.

Day 13

Visit Longwa Village on the border with Myanmar and then drive to Dibrugarh.

It will take a couple of hours drive after breakfast to reach the ridge-top village of Longwa right on the border with Myanmar - the border actually follows the ridge. There are great views from the village, particularly southwards into Myanmar. Many of the houses here are built in the traditional Konyak way with a timber construction and palm-leaf-roofing and we will visit one of these houses, the home of the 'angh' or chief. This house is half in India and half in Myanmar. After spending some time in this outlandish place we will return to Mon for a late lunch and then continue our drive through the tea gardens of Assam to the city of Dibrugarh beside the Brahmaputra. Overnight in Dibrugarh.

Visit Dibrugarh's Jagannath Temple and its oldest market and then fly to Kolkata.

We have some time in the morning to visit the Jagannath Temple, actually a recently built replica of a temple in Puri in the state of Odisha. We can also stroll through one of the city's bazaar streets, before heading out to the airport to catch our flight to Kolkata. Overnight at an airport-accessible hotel in Kolkata.

Joining Arrangements & Transfers

The group will meet at the hotel in Kolkata on Day 1 of the Land Only itinerary.

A single group transfer is provided from Kolkata Airport on Day 1 of the Land Only itinerary and back to the same airport on the final day of the Land Only itinerary.

Anyone may join the group transfers by prior arrangement. Travelling as a group or on public transport saves energy. If this is not practical, we can provide private transfers at an additional cost. Taxis are also available.

All meals are provided from breakfast on Day 2 to lunch on Day 15.

Special Diets

Whilst we can cater for vegetarians, albeit sometimes with a more limited choice, we cannot always provide for special diets. Due to the nature of some of the trips that we operate and the countries in which we operate them, it can be very hard (and sometimes impossible) to cater for a wide range of dietary choices and you may have to supplement your meals with food/snacks from home. If you have specific dietary requirements please do speak to our sales team and they will be able to advise you whether or not we will be able to offer your specific choice. Please note that we are unable to provide separate menus and cannot accept liability for any problems arising from special dietary requirements or intolerances.

Food & Water

It is not recommended to drink untreated water from the taps. You should take purification tablets or a filter bottle (such as a Water-To-Go bottle) to treat your water. We do not encourage the purchasing of single use plastic bottles.

Part of the experience of a visit to India is sampling the excellent local food. Indian cuisine offers a wide choice of dishes, much more variety than the 'curries' we are used to in Indian restaurants at home and the naan breads are like nothing you'll have experienced. Whether the food is presented as a dinner buffet or as a set menu, there will always be vegetarian options. Breakfasts and dinners are provided at our overnight accommodation. Breakfasts include cereals, bread, possibly in the form of local 'rotis', eggs, hard-boiled or omelette, often one or two delicious, spicy Indian breakfast options, fruit, juice, hot water for tea or coffee. Lunches will usually be at a local restaurant where you can choose what you want - the guide will help with this. Dinners will usually take the form of a buffet with both international and local food choices. The cuisine of both Assam and Nagaland is distinct for its minimal use of spices and oil, relying instead on fresh herbs, foraged ingredients like fermented bamboo shoots, organic greens, soy and fiery chilis. Staples include sticky rice, with river fish or smoked or boiled meats, sometimes paired with digestive broths called Khar, as well as sour curries known as Maasor Tenga.

Accommodation

We will have 14 nights accommodation in a mix of tidy tourist-class hotels (generally 3-star) and some simpler guesthouses and rural resort hotels and 1 night on Majuli Island in homestay bungalow accommodation. All accommodation is allocated on a twin-sharing basis. If you are travelling by yourself, you will be paired up with another single client of the same sex. Depending upon availability it may be possible to arrange single rooms for the hotel nights. Group Leader & Support Staff

The group will be accompanied by a professional English-speaking leader who will meet the group on arrival at Guwahati Airport on Day 2 and leave the group at the Dibrugarh Airport for the flight back to Kolkata on Day 14. Additionally, there will be naturalist guides with the group at Kaziranga and Hollongapar. A cultural guide will assist the group during the time at Mon on Day 12. Representatives of our local partner will assist the group during the transits through Kolkata at the beginning and end of the holiday. Private, air-conditioned vehicles and drivers will be used for all road transfers.

Spending Money

Approximately £300 (or the equivalent in US dollars or euros) should be allowed for miscellaneous expenses including tips for your guides, snacks, bar bills, soft drinks, etc. There will be some opportunities to buy souvenirs on this trip. It is not necessary to purchase local currency (Indian Rupees) before you travel. Sterling and US dollars are readily exchanged in Kolkata and in Guwahati and in Jorhat. Since you will be changing the majority of your spending money into local currency during the first couple of days, one option is to travel with currency. Credit cards can be used to purchase many goods in the cities and are particularly useful for more expensive souvenirs. It is possible to withdraw cash (rupees only) from ATM’s in certain banks in the cities using credit and debit cards.

Guidance on Tipping

Tipping is an accepted and expected part of Indian culture, although you should only tip for services which are well done. We recommend that tips to your guides and driver be made from the group as a whole and that the group decides together on an appropriate amount. Your guide will help with sundry tipping; bell boys, other hotel staff, toilet attendants, lunchtime restaurant staff and game reserve guides and festival staff. This means you don't need to concern yourself with who to tip and who not to tip. Your guide will set up a tip 'kitty' for this and you will probably be asked to contribute 4000 rupees (£40) each for this at the start of the trip. Separately from this, you will need to tip the driver who will be with you for much of the trip. And you will need to tip your guide. As a rough guide we suggest that £100 per person (depending on group size) will allow you to pay reasonable tips.

Baggage Allowance

You should restrict your luggage to one main travel bag plus a small daypack to carry cameras, binoculars, water etc. A robust holdall or a piece of luggage fitted with wheels is appropriate for this kind of trip. The weight restriction on the internal flights is 15kg for check-in luggage and 7kg for hand luggage.

Group Size & Holiday Status

For each holiday there is a minimum number of participants required to enable it to go ahead. Once the minimum number is reached, the trip status will change from 'Available' to 'Guaranteed to run'. You can check the trip status for each departure in the ‘Dates and Prices’ table. Other than in exceptional circumstances, we will not cancel a trip once it has achieved this guaranteed to run status so you are free to proceed with your international flight booking and other travel arrangements.

Passport & Visas

Visa India

Most nationalities, including travellers from the UK, the USA and many European countries can apply for their Indian Visa online through the E-Visa Application process. e-Arrival Card - Important

Separately and additionally, foreign nationals must now complete an e-arrival card to present at immigration on arrival in India along with their e-Visa. The digital e-Arrival form is found here https://indianvisaonline.gov.in/earrival/ It should be completed within the 72 hours prior to your arrival in India.

Ebola Self-Declaration Form (SDF) - Important

All passengers travelling to India must now also complete the Ebola Self-Declaration Form (SDF) to present at immigration on arrival in India. The form is found here https://airsuvidha.civilaviation.gov.in It should be completed within the 72 hours prior to your arrival in India.

Sikkim

If you are joining one of our Sikkim Beneath Kangchenjunga (SIK) groups, we will ask you to complete a Sikkim Permit form approximately 20 days before you travel. You will need your Indian Visa details for this form. A 30-day E-Tourist Visa can be applied for within 30 days of travel and will usually be processed within a couple of days. As an alternative you can apply for a 1-Year E-Tourist Visa within 180 days of travel. DO NOT MENTION SIKKIM in ‘Places to be visited’ when you make your application.

Nagaland

If you are joining the Kaziranga, Nagaland and the Hornbill Festival (HBF) group we need to apply for a PAP (Protected Area Permit) for Nagaland once the tour is confirmed. Approximately 20 days before you travel, we will need from you a copy of your passport and of your Indian E-Tourist Visa, along with a colour passport photo and a copy of your international flight e-tickets.

Health & Vaccinations

Vaccinations:

You should be up to date with the routine vaccinations recommended in the UK for overseas travel.

You must also contact your doctor or travel clinic to check if there are specific vaccinations or other preventive measures that you need for the area you are visiting, in good time before you are due to depart.

On holidays to more remote areas you should also have a dental check-up.

It is your responsibility to ensure that you have the correct travel documents including vaccinations and health certificates.

Severe Allergies:

If you have a severe allergy please inform the KE office before you travel. We will do all we can to help, but we cannot guarantee an allergy free environment on KE trips.

Currency

The currency of India is the Indian Rupee.

Climate

December is the best time to visit Assam and Nagaland with little expected rainfall at this season. Daytime temperatures at Jorhat typically range from 15°C to 27°C, misty in the mornings and warm and sunny in the afternoons. Temperatures fall to 12°C at night. Higher, at around 1400 metres, Kohima is cooler with daytime temperatures up to 15°C, falling as low as 5°C at night.
