Our Holiday Grades Explained

To show the relative difficulty of our holidays, each trip is graded on a scale of 1 to 12, with 12 being the most challenging. Although we have tried to make our grading system as clear as possible, it cannot take into account your personal interests, abilities or experience. If you have any questions about the nature of a particular trip or its suitability for you, please read the 'Is this holiday for you?' section or contact us.

Suitable for most people in good health, holidays at this grade include only limited amounts of activity.

For anyone who enjoys exploring on foot rather than always in a vehicle. A mixture of sightseeing and easier walking of around 2-5hrs a day. Walking paths could be around sites, through cities or on well marked trails and at lower altitudes (under 2500m). Regions are rarely flat so some ascent or descents could be expected but rarely above around 300 – 400m per day.

Suitable for reasonably fit individuals, such as regular walkers and cyclists. There can be the occasional more difficult day.

Suitable for fit weekend walkers. Consecutive walking days, of around 4-8 hours on generally good paths. Ascents and descents will increase and could be 1000m+ but often less. Some walking may be at higher altitude (3000m – 4500m) with the occasional higher pass and you may have some walking on snow. There may be occasions where you have to carry overnight kit on one or two days.

Physically challenging holidays, where you need to be prepared before you go.

Previous trekking experience and a good level of fitness is required for these trips as there will be consecutive days of longer trekking in more remote areas with rougher paths. Days will be around 5-9 hours often with some steep ascents and descents. Some ice/snow trekking is possible with the use of crampons and/ice axe. You may be required to carry a heavier backpack with overnight essentials or equipment for some days and sleeping at higher altitudes (generally up to 5000m).

Overview

The colourful Canary Island of Tenerife is home to dramatic volcanic landscapes, rugged coastlines and wonderful walking. Beyond its popular resorts, you’ll discover lunar terrain, unusual rock formations, lush forests, historic towns and the spectacular volcano of Teide (3,718m). KE has brought together these contrasting landscapes and experiences in a varied Canary Islands walking holiday.

Based in the mountain village of Vilaflor, our first walks take us along the ancient Camino de Chasna, where we explore a lunar landscape dotted with distinctive fairy chimneys. We then venture into the black volcanic terrain around Chinyero, Tenerife’s youngest volcano, before heading to the west coast for a boat excursion with the chance to spot dolphins. Next, we climb Pico Guajara (2,730m), enjoying far-reaching views across the vast caldera of Teide National Park and towards the summit of Mount Teide. We also explore this remarkable volcanic landscape by cable car and on foot, discovering unusual rock formations and panoramic viewpoints.

The second half of the holiday reveals another side of Tenerife, as we move to the historic town of San Cristóbal de La Laguna. Here, we walk through the lush laurisilva forests and deep ravines of Anaga Natural Park, before exploring the rugged northern coastline and the historic harbour town of Garachico. With time to discover traditional Canarian towns, enjoy coastal views and perhaps swim in natural volcanic rock pools, this holiday showcases the remarkable variety of Tenerife’s landscapes, history and culture.

Is this holiday for you?

The walks during this holiday follow a mixture of rural tracks, mountain paths, forest trails and coastal routes. Much of the terrain is well-maintained, although we occasionally encounter loose rock and volcanic ground, which can become slippery in wet conditions. While there are no significant sections of exposure, some trails are narrow and uneven, so we are unable to recommend this holiday for those who suffer from vertigo.

Walking days are typically around 5 hours in duration, with regular ascents and descents. We have graded this holiday as a 5 due to the more challenging walks on Days 2 and 4, particularly the ascent of Pico Guajara (2,730m). Alongside these more demanding days, the itinerary includes opportunities to relax, enjoy the natural surroundings and discover the culture and historic towns of Tenerife. This holiday is ideally suited to regular hill walkers looking for a rewarding week exploring the island on foot.

Your trip begins with a private transfer to the town of Vilaflor. This is the highest village in Tenerife, located at 1,414m above sea level on the island’s southern side of Teide National Park. This quaint mountain village is surrounded by stunning Canarian pine forests. You’ll have a free afternoon to wander around the town before relaxing at our comfortable hotel in Vilaflor, with its spa and outdoor pool.

This morning we travel further north to start our walk through a volcanic lunar landscape with exceptionally striking rock formations. Walking along part of the Camino de Chasna, a five-century-old trade trail, we discover the dreamlike rock formations known as "fairy chimneys". This is one of the island’s most unique landscapes. The walk ends in the centre of the village of Vilaflor.

Moving location, the day starts with a morning transfer to the Cañadas del Teide, an enormous 18km-wide volcanic caldera formed by ancient eruptions that helped shape the island we are exploring today. From here, we enjoy impressive views of El Teide (3,718m), the highest mountain in Spain. We take the cable car up to approximately 3,200m before walking to the viewpoint overlooking Pico Viejo, where we can admire the vast volcanic landscape. After descending by cable car, we continue on foot for approximately 5km to the iconic Parador de Las Cañadas. There is also the opportunity to explore the surrounding area and visit the fascinating rock formations of "Roques de García".

A challenging, but also very rewarding, ascent to Montaña Guajara (2730m), the second highest peak on Tenerife. At the summit, breath fresh air and enjoy the superb views across the huge Cañadas del Teide Crater, towards the peak and across the southern part of the island. Today is a easier day. We take a private coach to Puerto de la Cruz, in the north of Tenerife. From here, we will start our walk for the day along the spectacular coastline, enjoying the fresh sea air and spectacular ocean views.

We then drive on to the island’s most easterly town of Garachico. This quaint and beautiful historic town was the capital of Tenerife before it was damaged by a lava flow during the major eruption of Volcán Trevejo in 1706. You’ll have time to visit the town, have lunch and maybe swim in the natural swimming pools near the harbour before we drive to our hotel, Nivaria, in the old centre of San Cristóbal de La Laguna!

Today we explore Tenerife’s rainforest ecosystem, the laurisilva woods in Anaga Nature Park. Located above the cliffs in the north-eastern corner of the island, this area offers a completely different landscape of lush green vegetation, deep ravines and steep cliffs. We have a choice of two walks today: a shorter, steeper route or a longer but gentler option.

This afternoon, a transfer will take us to our hotel in San Cristóbal de La Laguna. There will be enough time to explore this beautiful historic town, founded more than 500 years ago. It is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its multicultural influences, which have given the town a unique authenticity. It has a lively centre for you to explore, full of shops and local restaurants.

Today we transfer to the village of El Palmar. Once again, we see another side of this amazing island, as the western part of the island is a stark contrast to yesterday’s lush rainforest. We walk through open woodlands and farmland, ascending to a great viewpoint before continuing along steep barrancos to the tiny village of Teno Alto. Traversing a high plateau with bizarre vegetation, including giant euphorbia plants, we arrive at Punta Teno and enjoy the lovely views. On a clear day, we can see all the way to La Gomera.

A true "experience" of Tenerife with a good variety of walks and accommodation - all lovely. A lot of downhill walking, sometimes quite steep and exposed. You need good knees and a reasonable head for heights. Cao was a wonderful guide, passionate, full of information and extremely helpful. Nothing was too much trouble. The booking process and communication with KE Adventure were excellent.

We had a fantastic trip. Every walk was different and each was planned with care to show us the huge wealth and variety of landscape and vegetation in the different regions of Tenerife. Cao is an excellent guide. He is enthusiastic and passionate about sharing his island with visitors and his skill leading the group and planning the walks was much appreciated. His choice of accommodation was also very good and gave us yet more variety during the week - all good! We enjoyed meeting like-minded ... hikers and had lots of fun together during the week. I would thoroughly recommend the trip.

This was a quickly arranged replacement for a Lebanese Mountain Trails trip and it certainly didn't disappoint. Each days walk was well planned to provide variety of both terrain and flora showcasing the best of Tenerife. Cao proved an excellent guide and host and has great enthusiasm in sharing his local knowledge. La Laguna proved a great location for a relaxing free day in this World Heritage site. Accommodation was excellent and well placed throughout the trip.

A great break from the British winter, walking off the Xmas excesses! ★★★★★

Following our superb back-to-back trips to Fuerteventura and Lanzarote in 2022, we decided to back-to-back Tenerife and La Gomera in January this year. The switch to La Gomera is extremely straightforward, made even easier by Cao, our excellent guide on Tenerife, and the holidays really complement each other. Accommodation on the island was varied and excellent; the hotels in La Laguna and Santa Cruz were absolutely superb. Tenerife offers very scenic hiking with plenty of ups and downs. Teide ... is the “main attraction”, but January is a tricky month weather wise and we weren’t able to do it. There are, however lots of alternatives. My favourite part of Tenerife is Anaga, with trails that have been used by locals for centuries, exquisitely cut out of the hillside. Sea swimming is possible in January - a bit chilly, but manageable. This holiday has a rest day in the interesting town of La Laguna, the old capital, with many historic buildings, bars and cafes. Our guide, Cao was excellent company and a good leader. He has my particular thanks for nursing me through the week with both a lingering chest infection and a very sore knee. Advice to future travellers - bring gear for every weather eventuality. Even on the same day it can be hot, cold, wet or dry - Teide has snowfall in winter, so boot spikes may also be useful. Eating out is extremely good value, and wine and beer are cheap.

Another Canarian gem!

After a fantastic first visit to the Canaries in March 2022, I decided to check out another island for a bit of winter sun, walking and culture. This trip did the job and didn’t disappoint. The walking was varied from the heights of the Teide National Park, the beauty of the Masca Gorge and the lushness of the Anaga Peninsula. Unfortunately, we didn’t make it to the top of Mt Teide due to restrictions following recent snowfall, but our excellent guide Cao quickly identified an alternative ... outing in the national park for more stunning views of this impressive volcano. You do need to be prepared for all conditions; walking at heights of around 3000m is cold even on the sunniest days at this time of year and Anaga is green and verdant for good reason, so bringing rain gear is also essential. It was not all hard work. It was great to have some downtime on our free day to visit some of the cultural sites in the north of this diverse island. Laguna is a gem and rightly deserves its World Heritage status and, with our hotel located in a historic town house on the main street (my favourite accommodation of the trip), we were right in the centre of the action. There are plenty of bars and restaurants and it was great to check these out independently on the nights when dinner was not included. Public transport is extremely efficient and it proved easy to catch the local bus to Puerto de la Cruz for further sightseeing opportunities. Our guide Cao was great and a pleasure to travel with. His enthusiasm for Tenerife was infectious and it was sad that this excellent one-week holiday was over all too quickly. It leaves me with the difficult to decision as to which of the Canary Islands to explore next – Hasta la vista!

A week well spent

Was not sure what to expect on a walking trip to Tenerife. Booked last minute as something to do in the sun and to begin getting 'match fit' for hiking again. As such, towards the end of the first day was a bit 'character building' for me however this day and every other day was soooo enjoyable. Varied, fascinating landscape. Very enthusiastic, knowledgeable guide. Fantastic crowd of like minded travellers. Fully enjoyed and fully recommend.

Undiscovered Tenerife & Pico Teide

This trip I did was in mid January. What an amazing week of walking it was. The weather was sunny, but when up in the mountains it did feel bit cooler when the wind blew, only had one day where it rained at start of our walk, but it didn't last long. The walks are very manageable with the walk up to the refuge on Teide was the harder one as the last part is quite steep. The views are amazing with fantastic views of the coast & the landscapes change in the different areas you are. Its ... amazing how green the north of the island is with beautiful colours of flowers & the different types of foliage. The food is plentiful, traditional & excellent, lots of the food is grown on the island inc. bananas, tomatoes. The guides we had were fantastic, their knowledge & enthusiasm for what they do makes the trip worthwhile. Its pretty cheap out there as I didn't spend that much money. Overall I would highly recommend this trip.

Lots of variety in scenery and locations, and good weather

The trip was in early November but the weather was still mostly good - very warm in the south, cloudy in the north in Anaga, but still quite mild. We had no rain apart from a brief shower one day n Anaga. Tiede was cold and very windy at the top on our final ascent, but well worth the effort. The walk up to the refuge the day before was quite a long ascent, about 1100 m over about 6 hours, but the refuge was very well equipped and warm, so we were well prepared for the early start the next day. ... The Anaga National Park was very enjoyable - beautiful scenery , very varied almost subtropical forests and steep cliffs mixed with sandy coves (with swimming!). Our guide took us to some interesting family run restaurants wherever we stayed and knew some good quality, fairly quiet beaches for us. Both guides were very friendly and helpful. On the last day I and some others in the group visited the Botanical Gardens in Santa Cruz, which was a very pleasant end to the week. Overall the trip has a lot to recommend it - relaxation mixed with some challenge, and well organised.

A Wonderful Walking Week

This is a wonderful walking week.We had a great guide in ciao,he was so friendly and enthusiastic,he really did make the holiday. The pace was good ,and even the 2 day trek on Teide is not bad for regular hillwalkers like myself. The first day in masca gorge was great ending on a nice beach for a cooling swim and boat trip back. The walks in anaga are impressive although generally more cloudy than the south. On the last day we had a change due to windy weather and climbed a lovely peak above ... playa Americas in lovely sunny weather. During the whole week we were well looked after by ciao who became a real friend. Food and accommodation was good,the best hotel was in la lagunas where the buffet breakfast was lovely. I certainly recommend this trip and tick off teide.

Truly a magnificent trip. One which will linger long in the memory, A lovely island, full of history, mystery and culture; and a range of landscapes from the arid volcanic deserts of the south to the lush rain-forest covered with laurel trees and dotted with traditional hamlets in the north. Cao and Aaron were excellent guides and their enthusiasm, pride and love for their homeland clearly shone through. The eclectic range of accommodation added to the fun and the food tastings and restaurants ... chosen serving fresh local cuisine were an added bonus. Highly recommended for those adventurous in spirit.

Great way to discover Tenerife!

This was a great way to see 'off the beaten track' Tenerife. The first few days walking were pretty full on and I'm quite fit! The grading maybe needs to be upped a little. The itinerary was switched around and we did Teide first due to not being able to get into the refuge on our intended night. We also had 'unseasonably cold' weather for March including snow showers on the ascent of Teide - remember your gloves and hat! Some people also had lightweight icegrips / Yaktrax which were very ... useful - and poles were essential, I can highly recommend the KE lightweight ones! The guides - Cao and Aaron were fantastic - enthusiastic, knowledgeable, helpful and always cheerful. The accommodation in Chio was let down a bit by the fact that 6 of us had to share a bathroom but the food at the local house was fantastic and there was plenty of it! The accommodation in La Laguna and Santa Cruz was good and central and we got chance to explore both towns. A great trip :) We were unlucky with the weather and experienced snow on Teide which made it chilly and a bit slippy underfoot! Make sure you take hats and gloves

fantastic walking experience

Superbly organised from start to finish. Local guides, Cao and Aaron from Anaga Experience are the most welcoming , informative and entertaining I have met. Hiking days are full and require sure footing but enjoyable for all regular hikers. Plenty of time to enjoy and photograph. The highlight of the trip conquers El Teidi Volcano with superb views above the cloud of the caldera itself and neighbouring Canary Islands. Trip is fantastic for geology, diverse and endemic botany, stunning ... scenery,lovely local food and wine (all included). Accommodation modest but nice in all locations. Best time for flowers probably April- May. I went in April, daily temperatures average app. 25 lower down and chilly in the mountains, needing fleece level clothing in the mornings. Bring a swim costume, the sea was a welcome relief on 2/3 occasions. Little extra money only for tips, extra drinking, shops (really only chance would be on the last day in Santa Cruz). Bring a camera, this island will surprise and charm you. Great small group size of 12 people of whom you are likely to have something in common. In summary.... awesome!

The six-day-trip offers a wide variety of walks, some quite hard and others relatively easy. We were based at a homestay in Chio for the first 3 days tackling Pico Teide on days 1 and 2 and the Masca Gorge on day 3. The accommodation was comfortable if quirky, the only downside being one toilet/bathroom for three rooms or six people. As we started the climb of Pico Teide from the Parador Hotel, the ascent to the Refuge was 1,140 meters of climbing, more than enough for one day! The Refuge ... itself was well equipped and comfortable with dormitory style bunk bed accommodation. The early morning climb took about an hour to the cable car station and from there it was another 45 minutes to the top of Pico Teide. The cable car offers a quick route down for those suffering from tiredness or the altitude. The descent of the Masca Gorge was spectacular, with towering cliffs and a path winding in and out of the rocks at the floor of the gorge. It was possible to swim in the sea at the beach before the boat arrived to take us to Los Gigantes to link up with our minibus. The accommodation in La Laguna, the old capital, was oldy-worldy and classic, and it was a joy to walk around the old streets and take in the atmosphere. Accommodation in La Laguna and later in Santa Cruz, provided an ideal base for exploring the verdant Anaga region. The three walks that we did were not too taxing and each offered spectacular views of the coast line. The common thread throughout the holiday was the enthusiasm and helpfulness of our two guides, Aaron and Cao. They were a pleasure to be with and they went out of their way to make sure that all our needs were catered for.

Great variety of walks, warm weather, and enthusiastic local guides

This holiday had a great variation of walks from the rocky Teide and Masca Gorge, to the green coastal Anaga region, and plenty of sunny warm weather. The local guides Cao and Aaron, who shared leading the walks, were very knowledgeable about the history of the island and its flora/fauna, and both had an infectious enthusiasm which was the remaining ingredient needed to make this holiday fantastic. The meals taken in local restaurants showed off the local cuisine really well, with more food ... than I could eat! I enjoyed the Palmetum in Santa Cruz on the final morning (although I suggest it is for people who have an interest in plants). Also the trip notes didn't say to take a swimming costume, but there were several opportunities to swim.

A varied and interesting holiday

This was a good holiday, although we were all rather taken aback by how cold it was at times, but I guess it was February! We all made the summit of El Teide, and returned safely, but our descent would have been much easier had we been carrying crampons, or even microspikes which weigh little, since the path became quite icy, probably because the snow was melted by the sun and then promptly froze in the low air temperature. It was a holiday of contrasts, the rocky volcanic terrain followed by ... lush vegetation and coastal scenery. Our guides Cao and Aaron were very enthusiastic and knowledgeable re Tenerife, and could not have been more helpful, nothing was too much trouble

A well organised holiday.

An enjoyable holiday organised by Cao and Aaron. The accomodation arranged was comfortable and meals very good. The trip notes for the ascent of Mount Teide were inaccurate and need revision. The notes for the last walk did not match the GPS trail. The meal we carried up to the Teide refuge was filling and similar to meals taken up by other guests. Only a kettle and small microwave oven are available for guest use as far as I could see. With hindsight I might have taken a dehydrated meal with ... me but the meal provided was ok. The breakfast and lunch on Teide were fine. I enjoyed the holiday, meeting Cao, Aaron and the rest of the group everyone got on well. Please send Cao some more KE tee shirts ( medium) he's only got one! JSE

Beautiful Island

We started in the south of Tenerife in the village of Chio. Quaint homestay with good food (although breakfast was a bit basic). The first day was a walk down Masca gorge to the sea. Beautiful gorge but very slippy underfoot - care required. The 2 day hike up Pico Teide followed. Definitely a highlight. We did the 6 hour walk to the refuge on the first day and then a fairly sleepless overnight followed by a 5 am rise to hike to the summit for dawn. Great experience but wrap up well. Below zero ... on the summit. Then to the north of the island for 2 nights in pretty La Laguna followed by 2 nights in Santa Cruz. Great walks in the Anaga peninsula down gorges to the sea. The guides Cao and Aaron were great with excellent restaurants used for evening meals. Highly recommended trip.

A single transfer from the airport is provided on Day 1 of the Land Only itinerary.

Anyone may join the group transfers by prior arrangement. Travelling as a group or on public transport saves energy. If this is not practical, we can provide private transfers at an additional cost. Taxis are also available.

Travelling to your Destination

If flying from the UK there are low cost airlines available to the start and from the end of your holiday.

To benefit from full financial protection, ease your holiday planning, and avoid dealing with airlines, we can book scheduled flights from the UK as part of a flight inclusive package. Scheduled flights are usually more expensive that low cost alternatives, however potentially less stressful if your flight is cancelled or delayed. If you book flights through KE Adventure Travel we will offset the carbon of your flight.

All breakfasts, 3 picnic lunches and 2 dinners are included.

Whilst we can cater for vegetarians, albeit sometimes with a more limited choice, we cannot always provide for special diets.  Due to the nature of some of the trips that we operate and the countries in which we operate them, it can be very hard (and sometimes impossible) to cater for a wide range of dietary choices and you may have to supplement your meals with food/snacks from home.  If you have specific dietary requirements please do speak to our sales team and they will be able to advise you whether or not we will be able to offer your specific choice.  Please note that we are unable to provide separate menus and cannot accept liability for any problems arising from special dietary requirements or intolerances.

Water from the taps may not be drinkable in all locations on this trip - please check with your guide. We recommend taking water purification tablets and a reusable bottle with a filter such as Water-to-Go, which can both be used to help make safe other water sources. Please note that we do not encourage the purchase of single use plastic bottles.

Breakfasts are continental in style with tea and coffee, orange juice, muesli or cereals and bread. Occasionally you’ll come across eggs, plus jam, honey and cheese. On walking days we’ll have a packed lunch which we’ll carry with us and eat together at a suitable spot. These lunches will normally include a sandwich (meat/cheese), fruit and biscuits or cake. Occasionally during the week we may take lunch in a simple local restaurant. Evening meals are taken at the homestay in Chio and in local restaurants for the nights we are not in Chio. The Canary Islands has a great climate so it’s not unusual that ingredients grow on them taste so fresh. You’ll find tasty fruit and vegetables (potatoes, bananas, tomatoes and pumpkins) growing all year round. The tropical climate means you’ll come across papaya and mango juicy. Don’t forget the Atlantic Ocean brings a rich variety of local fish including parrotfish, grouper and corvina which is similar to seabass. If you don’t mind trying something a bit unusual then cabrito al horno is roasted goat and incredibly popular.

Tenerife is home to a wide range of restaurants for all tastes and budgets.  If you go to Puerto de la Cruz walk out of the main Plaza del Charco and along Calle San Felipe and you’ll find yourself in the old fishing area known as La Ranilla. For many years visitors and residents alike have known that the restaurants along these narrow cobbled streets offer the very best fish, seafood, Canarian and Italian food. Simple local dishes include conejo en salmorejo (rabbit stew), gambas a la plancha (grilled prawns) or cherne con papas arrugadas y mojo (grouper with wrinkled, boiled potatoes and spicy sauce). You’ll also find basa served with mango sauce or pork fillets in herb baked crust.

Vegetarians, pescatarians and special diets are still a little unknown on the Canary Islands, as this is primarily an area known for its meaty dishes. However, fish is in abundance, as are salads. You’ll come across a variety of side dishes that can be mixed and matched to make a tasty main. Champinones are mushrooms usually lightly fried in olive oil and garlic, whilst berenjenas are tasty cooked aubergines. Other good choices are menestra which is a filling vegetable stew and delicious served when served with fresh bread. Look out for pimientos de padrón which are small grilled peppers sprinkled with rock salt and, of course the famous wrinkly potatoes. Vegan diets will find it a struggle in the Canary Islands as there is a lot of dairy and cheese on menus.

For the first four nights, we stay in a charming, small hotel in the mountain village of Vilaflor, surrounded by the natural beauty of Tenerife's volcanic landscape and Canarian pine forests. The hotel offers comfortable, traditionally styled rooms and a welcoming atmosphere, with restaurant and spa facilities where you can relax after a day of walking. There is also an outdoor pool, providing a pleasant spot to unwind and enjoy the mountain surroundings.

The final three nights are spent in the historic heart of San Cristóbal de La Laguna, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here, we stay in a comfortable hotel, ideally located for exploring the town's historic streets, shops and restaurants. The accommodation combines traditional character with modern comforts, providing a relaxing base for the final part of our holiday. All rooms are en-suite.

Accommodation is based on twin share. If you are travelling by yourself, you will be paired with another single client of the same sex. Single rooms are available for a supplementary cost, subject to availability. If you are planning to extend your holiday, additional nights at the group hotel are available on request.

The group will be led by a professional and qualifed tour leader.

This holiday involves going to high altitude. During the course of your trip you will reach altitudes in excess of 3500 metres. This is not something that you should worry about; the human body is quite capable of adapting to a very wide range of altitudes, but it is important that we follow some simple rules in order to acclimatise successfully. Before coming on this holiday you should read the advice on trekking at high altitude. You can also talk to one of our trekking experts if you have any concerns about altitude.

Approximately 200 - 250 Euros should be sufficient for miscellaneous expenses, including a reasonable amount of wine with meals, not included dinners and lunch on day 8 ATMs are available at the airport and in La Laguna and Santa Cruz. Credit cards can be used in La Laguna and Santa Cruz.

We ask you to restrict your baggage to one main bag and a day pack of approximately 25-30 litres. As you will have to carry your own bags from the vehicle to the hotels (including possibly upstairs), we recommend packing light in a bag with wheels or a rucksack for this holiday.

For each holiday there is a minimum number of participants required to enable it to go ahead. Once the minimum number is reached, the trip status will change from 'Available' to 'Guaranteed to run'. You can check the trip status for each departure in the ‘Dates and Prices’ table. Other than in exceptional circumstances, we will not cancel a trip once it has achieved this guaranteed to run status so you are free to proceed with your international flight booking and other travel arrangements.

We sell this holiday on a Land Only basis and recommend that you book your flights to Tenerife South Airport. A group transfer from Tenerife South Airport to El Boilco in the Teno Mountains is included in the holiday price. Please refer to the 'Joining arrangements and transfers' section of the trip dossier for further details.

Flights SHOULD NOT be booked until you have received your booking confirmation and the trip is showing 'Guaranteed to Run' or 'Limited'.

If flying from the UK there are a number of low cost airlines to Tenerife. Note that there are two airports in Tenerife and you should book your flights to Tenerife South. Easyjet flights from Gatwick, Bristol, Newcastle and Manchester, Ryanair from Manchester, Thomson from Exeter and Manchester, Monarch from Birmingham, Stansted and Manchester plus Thomas Cook from Manchester work well with the arrival and departure transfer. Flights from other departure airports and with other airlines may require additional nights (at extra cost) in Tenerife. Click on the 'Flight information' link below for further information on booking low cost airlines. Alternatively if you would prefer to book a 'flight inclusive package' using scheduled airlines from the UK please contact our flights department for a quote. Whilst flight prices are likely to be more expensive you will benefit from full financial protection.

Europe

Your passport must meet 2 requirements. It must be:

  • less than 10 years old on the day you enter (check the ‘date of issue’)

  • valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave (check the ‘expiry date’)

A passport with 6 months remaining validity at the end of your stay is generally required, and you should have at least 2 blank pages for each country that you visit.

For other nationalities, please refer to your own Government website for the latest information.

It is your responsibility to ensure that you have the correct travel documents including vaccinations and health certificates (see Health & Vaccinations below), and visas for your holiday. Please ensure that you check the FCDO for the latest advice for each country visited before travel.

Vaccinations:

You should be up to date with the routine vaccinations recommended in the UK for overseas travel.

You must also contact your doctor or travel clinic to check if there are specific vaccinations or other preventive measures that you need for the area you are visiting, in good time before you are due to depart.

Please ensure you are looking at the recommendations for all countries visited on your holiday plus recommendations for any borders you cross.

On holidays to more remote areas you should also have a dental check-up.

It is your responsibility to ensure that you have the correct travel documents including vaccinations and health certificates.

Severe Allergies:

If you have a severe allergy please inform the KE office before you travel. We will do all we can to help, but we cannot guarantee an allergy free environment on KE trips.

Getting some additional exercise before coming on an active holiday makes a lot of sense. The fitter you are, after all, the more enjoyable you will find the experience.

You should be aerobically fit and comfortable with walking 3 to 6 hours for consecutive days. Hill walking, with a good amount of ascent and descent, is the best training. Running, cycling and swimming are also good for developing cardiovascular fitness and stamina.

The islands of the Canaries are a year-round holiday destination with what is often described as eternal spring conditions. Tenerife has its own micro-climate with the South of the island being barren and dry, whilst the North has an abundance of lush vegetation, rich flora and beautiful forest. Tenerife is the most varied of the Canary Islands with five different climate zones – desert, scrub, pine, laurel and dragon. During the period from September to March, we can expect daytime temperatures ranging from 16 to 24 degrees Celsius, becoming progressively cooler as we gain height in the mountains. Daytimes will be pleasant for walking but evenings can appear chilly so remember to bring a few items of warmer clothing.

As a reputable tour operator, KE supports the British Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office's ‘Travel Aware’ campaign to enable British citizens to prepare for their journeys overseas. The 'Travel Aware' website provides a single, authoritative source of advice for all kinds of travellers and we recommend that before travel, all KE clients visit the official UK Government website at travelaware.campaign.gov.uk and read the FCDO Travel Advice for their chosen destination. All other nationalities should check their government websites for relevant information.

We then drive on to the island’s most easterly town of Garachico. This quaint and beautiful historic town was the capital of Tenerife before it was damaged by a lava flow during the major eruption of Volcán Trevejo in 1706. It is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its multicultural influences, which have given the town a unique authenticity. Land Only Information

We sell this holiday on a Land Only basis allowing you the flexibility to choose the travel method which best suits you. The holiday starts at the group accommodation at Play San Juan. A single timed transfer from Tenerife South Airport is provided. The holiday ends in Santa Cruz a single timed transfer back to Tenerife South Airport will be provided.

Flights and other transport to your destination should not be booked until you have received your booking confirmation and the departure is showing 'Guaranteed to Run' or 'Limited'.
