Marshmallows & Madaba - Mountain Biking Jordan

"I never felt out of my depth as all the riding really was straightforward, Well with a bit of instruction and determination needed for the desert but other than that just fun times and good chat with my fellow companions"

Jordan has troubled neighbours, that's true, it ALWAYS has done.  On many occasions the country has been described to me as the Switzerland of the Middle East, remaining stable whilst all those surrounding frequently descend into turmoil.  Having now visited the country I can honestly say that it is one of the friendliest most hospitable countries I have ever been to and I empathise with their struggle to keep tourism alive.

As a regular road cyclist I'm used to keeping myself fit and road worthy. But mountain biking...not something I've done for a very long time and being honest was a bit nervous over the route. However in reality, a good base of fitness, miles in the saddle, and importantly a good sense of humour were all I needed. I never felt out of my depth as all the riding was really straightforward. With a bit of instruction and determination needed for the desert we had plenty of fun times and I had good chats with my fellow companions. I was also asked several times before travelling how I was going to cope as a female on a bike.  Reporting back, cycling as a female in Jordan offered no inconvenience. I had no need to steer clear of Lycra and cover up. I never felt uncomfortable and was never placed in an uncomfortable position by our guide. Granted I travelled in the cooler season, but even then there were times where shorts and a sleeveless top demanded an outing! If I was cycling alone and unsupported then there may be a need for more conservatism but being part of a group and with the local knowledge and respect of Anas in the area, this never crossed my mind.

The journey from the Dead Sea to the Red Sea is one of the best cycling experiences I have ever had. The diverse and stunning scenery, the warm hospitality of the local Jordanian family whom we had the pleasure of staying with, the Bedouin tales and food in Wadi Rum and of course the passion and fun delivered by our support team, Anas, Atef, Ghassan and Mohammed.

To end this tale of travels, I wanted to provide a couple of highlights and tips of the trip, which I hope you may find of interest!

Highlights - limited from many

Eating the traditional Jordanian dish of Chicken Mansaf at our home stay in Mukawir

Floating in the Dead Sea

Climbing up to Karak Castle

Descending to Dana Reserve as the sunset

Viewing the glorious colours and magnificence of Petra

Cycling across the mud flats of Wadi Rum

Toasting marshmallows with our Bedouin hosts

Experiencing the diversity of culture in a Madaba restaurant

Cycling Tips

Crossing the desert of Wadi Rum - pedal in low gear and go fast!

Fuel your ride to Karak - specifically the peanut, pistachio and sesame seed bars bottomed with a layer of coconut, yum yum, oh and the odd Medjool date!

Weather - check the forecast before travelling. Jordan can get cold, and windy. Layering definitely the way forward.

If you're looking for a unique travel experience then please don't ignore Jordan.... I made a promise to the people I met to encourage a positive travel experience. I honestly thought that it was a truly wonderful biking holiday and would recommend it to everyone.
