Top 5 Reasons to do the Tour du Mont Blanc

The Best of the Tour du Mont Blanc trek was one of the most rewarding adventures I’ve ever experienced. From standing at high mountain passes to crossing borders on foot and soaking up panoramic views at every turn, the Tour du Mont Blanc trek is simply unforgettable. Whether you're drawn to the full circuit or a shorter highlights version, KE’s TMB trips offer an incredible blend of challenge, beauty and culture. Whether you’re doing it guided or self-guided, over a week or two, here are the top five reasons I’d recommend the TMB to anyone who loves a challenge, a view and a great slice of cake…

1. The Sense of Accomplishment

This has to be number one. Not just the huge achievement of completing the full circuit, but the individual moments along the way that take your breath away – literally and emotionally! I’ll never forget the feeling of reaching the Col de la Seigne and looking into Italy for the first time, or crossing the Grand Col Ferret into Switzerland after a long, steady climb. You don’t just walk into a new country - you earn it. Standing on those high passes, with the wind in your face and the Alps stretching endlessly ahead is really quite empowering!

2. The Views (all day, every day)

There wasn’t a single day that didn’t blow me away. Lac Blanc was a real highlight for me; the mirror-like lake with Mont Blanc reflected in the water felt almost too perfect to be real. The balcony trails above the Chamonix Valley offered jaw-dropping views without needing to gain endless height and even the forested sections had their quiet magic. It’s a constantly shifting landscape that never stops surprising you.

3. Three Countries, One Trail

Trekking through France, Italy and Switzerland on foot is something I’ll never forget. Each place has its own feel: rustic charm and cheese fondue in France, lively cafés and gelato in Courmayeur and postcard-perfect villages in Switzerland like Champex. You’re not just crossing borders on a map, you’re walking into entirely new cultures, languages and flavours. It keeps the journey exciting and fresh, every single day.

4. The Food and the Hotels

After long days on the trail, the hotels we stayed in were the perfect retreats: warm, welcoming and wonderfully comfortable. It was such a treat to be so well looked after and the food? Absolutely fantastic. With all meals included, we never had to worry. Each day began with a hearty breakfast: fresh bread, pastries, fruit and good strong coffee to get us moving. Our guide would arrange varied picnic lunches from local shops: fresh sandwiches, pastries, salads and fruit, meaning we could skip the pricey mountain hut meals and pick the perfect picnic spot in the sunshine. Evenings were a highlight in themselves, with three-course dinners packed with local delicacies. Whether it was French cheese or Italian pasta, the food was always delicious and something to look forward to at the end of each day.

5. The People and the Unexpected Moments

One of the best parts of the TMB was the people. Our group bonded right from the start, with plenty of laughs, encouragement and shared achievement along the way. Our guide was fantastic too: full of local knowledge and always there with support when we needed it. However it’s not just the people in your group that have an impact on your adventure. As the days pass you recognise familiar faces: other trekkers on the same journey, all sharing the same highs and challenges. Whether it’s a friendly hello as you pass on the trail or a good catch up about how the journey is going while you queue for a cable car or cup of coffee; there was a real sense of togetherness and community that made every encounter feel special. That shared spirit really stays with you!

There’s something truly special about the TMB: the rhythm of the trail, the views that take your breath away, the friendships forged along the way... If you’re curious, even just a little, I’d say go for it! You won’t regret it.
