Take a look at our top 10 destinations to start the New Year, from the natural biosphere reserves of Madeira and La Gomera to the impressive landscapes of Nepal and Cape Verde. Holidays in Madeira

The Atlantic island of Madeira is enticing, exotic and endlessly surprising. The charming island of Fuerteventura is one of the Canary Island and lies just 100km off the North African coast. It's little known to walkers, but has a wonderful variety of trails meandering through pretty African-style architecture, and volcanoes so colourful, they resemble mountains of exotic spices. The island was declared a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve in 2009 due to an abundance of endemic flora and fauna. Walking highlights include the Betancuria Mountain Range, the sweeping dunes of Aguas Verdes and a hike up the spectacular volcanic backbone of the island.
