The island was declared a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve in 2009 due to an abundance of endemic flora and fauna. Walking highlights include the Betancuria Mountain Range, the sweeping dunes of Aguas Verdes and a hike up the spectacular volcanic backbone of the island.
