To show the relative difficulty of our holidays, each trip is graded on a scale of 1 to 12, with 12 being the most challenging. Although we have tried to make our grading system as clear as possible, it cannot take into account your personal interests, abilities or experience. Overview

This trip is wild in all of the best ways. We’ve coupled tonnes of energetic, exciting activities with a cultural deep dive into the authentic Bali and Komodo. We will visit temples and high mountain tops, go snorkelling and SUP boarding, surfing and even get involved in some traditional Indonesian mudwrestling. For two days towards the end of the trip we embark on one of the greatest wildlife experiences a family can have in South East Asia, meeting the Komodo Dragons. We will embark on an internal flight and then a boat ride out to a secluded cove to spend the night, before our nature trek the following morning to find the largest lizards on earth, accompanied by expert guides. The days are busy and full on, but we’ve tried to squeeze in some down time where we can, and of course all activities are optional if you decide to sit something out. This trip is also for those wishing to have that once in a lifetime experience of meeting the Komodo Dragons. These creatures come with a fearsome reputation, but worry not, we will be with expert guides and experienced park rangers throughout our time in the National Park, ensuring we have a safe and enjoyable visit, whilst also ensuring the natural habits and habitats of the dragons are protected and respected. If you want an active adventure with world class wildlife encounters, this is the trip for you.

Day 1

Arrival Day, transfer to Ubud

Arrive at the airport and transfer to Ubud. We will be met at the airport arrivals by our guide to begin our transfer to our hotel in Ubud. Our journey time will be just over an hour. We can check in and relax here for the afternoon before a welcome dinner and briefing by our guide in the evening.

Day 2

Sacred rituals and creative expression in Ubud

We'll wake this morning in our comfortable hotel and after breakfast we'll take part in a traditional Melukat purification ceremony. Whilst usually taken to cleanse the soul and purify oneself against negative or stressful energies, it will be the perfect antidote to a busy travel day the day before. It's a water based ceremony, and will be playful and fun. Of course, as with all parts of our adventure, this is purely optional and parents and children alike can choose to take part or watch on from the side of the pool.

This afternoon we'll head out on bikes for a thrill ride amongst the paddy fields. Strap on your helmet and join us for a fun, and mostly downhill bike ride stopping to chat with the local farmers, take lots of photos and to cool down in the many watery options available. We'll have lunch whilst we're out and there will be a support vehicle following along if we get tired or need a snack.

After our white knuckle ride this afternoon, we'll freshen up and head out to the Ubud Palace for a Kecak performance, a mesmerising display of fire and traditional dancing in a cauldron like amphitheatre, then out for dinner. There are many options here, including small street food type warungs, or more formal restaurants, and our guide will help us to pick a suitable location.

Day 3

A morning in the Ubud Monkey Forest, before a visit to the beautiful rice terraces at Jatiluwih

Show Details

Today we will check out of our hotel in Ubud before making our way to the nearby monkey forest. We'll venture this morning into the forest dotted with temple follies to see the long tailed macaques. These monkeys are rather streetwise and habituated to humans, which means they can be very cheeky! It is a fun experience to spend time with these monkeys, but follow the guides instructions and keep your wits about you to maximise the enjoyment of your experience.

We'll then transfer to the UNESCO World Heritage rice terraces at Jatiluwih and have lunch amongst this beautiful landscape. We'll take a short walk among the terraces meeting farmers and learning about the rice cultivation cycle before a lunch stop at a local warung, overlooking the terraces.

This afternoon we'll check in to our gorgeous eco-retreat with some free time to enjoy the pool and gardens before our dinner on site.

Day 4

Sacred Banjar Hot Springs & cultural arts in Pemuteran

Show Details

After a truly blissed out breakfast at our fabulous eco-retreat, and perhaps some early morning yoga with the sunrise, we'll embark on a 90 minute transfer through the rice fields and mountain villages to reach the Banjar Hot Spring. There are a set of warm water pools here to relax and enjoy splashing around in, so bring your swimwear, a towel and a change of clothes. After our dip we'll head to a local warung for an included lunch before continuing on to the Brahma Vihara Arama temple. This beautiful temple set in verdant surrounds is the perfect yin to this morning's yang. We'll all remove our shoes together and explore our surroundings. Our guide will talk us through the architecture and philosophy of this wonderful place, allowing for a moment of calm in our otherwise fun packed schedule.

This evening after returning to our hotel to freshen up, we will enjoy a Gamelan (dance) session with a local community group. We will be guided through this playful and percussive session learning some new moves in a relaxed and informal setting, with no pressures to perform, just to have fun! We'll eat dinner locally here.

Day 5

Manjangan Island snorkelling and free beach afternoon

From tiny tropical fish to giant majestic rays, hundreds of species of marine life can be sought out here. Beginners and less confident swimmers can stay in the shallows, whilst more able swimmers can venture into deeper waters accompanied by a specialist snorkelling guide. The waters here are abundant with sea life regardless of depth. We'll then return to the beach for an included BBQ lunch.

This afternoon is free for us to do as we please in this seaside paradise. Perhaps you'd wish to rent a SUP or take a walk up to the nearby viewpoint or just laze the afternoon away with a good book on the sands.

This evening we'll have an early dinner, giving us chance for plenty of sleep before tomorrow's early start.

Day 6

Early morning Pura Beji temple visit followed by a beautiful Sekumpul Waterfall walk

We'll rise early today to spend some time at the beautiful and unfrequented Pura Beji temple to learn about the daily offerings and family rituals associated with the temple.

After our temple visit we'll have breakfast, then take a transfer to the Sekumpul Waterfalls for a trek and a swim. These towering falls are a beautiful place to spend the afternoon, and whilst the trek up will take a short while, the reward will be totally worth it, with plenty of opportunities to swim in the shallow pools that surround these stunning cascades. We'll then head to our glamping pods to settle in for the evening and have an early dinner at the resort restaurant. Tomorrow is another early start to see sunrise on Mount Batur so we'll want to get an early night if we can.

Day 7

Sunrise near the summit of Mount Batur and thermal springs

This morning we wake super early for a sunrise jeep safari all the way up to the summit viewpoint of the giant Mount Batur. We'll wake just after 3am (we know, it's early but it'll be worth it!) and climb into the jeep for a drive into the heavens. It'll be cold at altitude, so bring some layers and get wrapped up in the jeep for a snooze as the driver winds their way up the mountainside. Just before dawn we should reach the viewpoint in the upper reaches of the mountainside where we'll have a prepared breakfast soaking in the all-encompassing views from one of the highest points of this island idyll.

We'll descend for some downtime at the hotel before checking out and boarding our transfer to Sanur. After a 90 minute transfer this afternoon we find the Tampak Siring spring temple and explore the shallow bathing pools and beautiful architecture here.

We then head on to our hotel for this evening, as well as the last three nights of the trip, and enjoy a meal in the hotel restaurant.

Day 8

Internal flight and boat to Komodo National Park, afternoon in the calm coastal waters

This morning we will have breakfast at the hotel before boarding an internal flight to Labuan Bajo. If you're lucky enough to get a view out of the window you should be able to see the tiny islands, turquoise waters and pearl white sands of the Komodo archipelago, as we jet over the top, bound for Labuan Bajo on the neighbouring island of Flores.

Upon landing we are immediately transferred to our boat, just a few metres away from the airport exit. Don't fight over the cabins kids, because each one is guaranteed a porthole with spectacular views! We'll cast our lines and begin sailing, bound for the Komodo National Park where we'll be docking for the night, in a protected bay within the park boundary. We'll have time to snorkel, kayak or SUP in the calm waters of the bay, before dinner on the boat and an evening of stargazing on deck. Memories are made of this!

Day 9

Komodo dragon trek, Komodo Marine Reserve and return to Bali

We'll wake up early this morning and head ashore for a Komodo Dragon trek with a specialist guide. An official Komodo National Park Ranger will lead our trek into the heart of dragon country. Their expert knowledge of the whereabouts and behaviours of the dragons will keep us safe and help us to learn all about these giant lizards in their natural habitat explaining the conservation efforts in action to try and keep these incredible creatures protected and thriving. After spending plenty of time with these sun loving dragons, we will trek back out to the coast and the boat. We'll have some time to snorkel and perhaps another kayaking session before an afternoon beach BBQ.

This afternoon the boat returns to Labuan Bajo and we board our flight back to Bali for our final few nights in Indonesia. This evening we'll be back in Sanur, and will eat dinner out at a local restaurant.

Day 10

The Great Indonesian Family Mudwrestling Championships and an evening Devdan performance in Sanur

Show Details

This morning we'll wake up and head for breakfast in our now familiar hotel in Sanur, we stayed here a couple of nights ago and will be staying here for the remainder of our trip.

After breakfast we'll kit up in clothes that we don't mind getting covered in mud, and head to our transfer for a 90 minute drive to the Mepantigan, a traditional Balinese martial arts mud arena, to begin our afternoon of mudfighting. We'll don our traditional sarongs (provided) and head to the shallow mud pits with muddy water in, where we will receive some tuition on how to safely and playfully wrestle without actually hurting each other, all whilst learning about this traditional martial art. Then, after the tuition ends, the wrestling begins! We'll all have tonnes of fun giggling and rolling around in the mud, a great opportunity for all ages to let off some steam. After the mud has settled and we've exhausted our best finishing moves, we'll get washed off and changed to head back to the hotel, bidding a fond farewell to our instructors.

After a much needed shower and freshen up, our evening begins with a stunning Devdan performance. This acrobatic theatre is often considered the Balinese Cirque du Soleil, with stunning choreography and wonderful music driven storytelling. We have our own designated family seating to ensure even the smallest audience members can see everything. The show will last around 90 minutes, and afterwards we'll head on to dinner in Sanur again at our own expense.

Day 11

Morning surfing with afternoon free at the beach in Sanur

Show Details

This morning, depending on tide times, we will head out for a surf lesson on the beach adjacent to our hotel. We'll learn the basics of how to catch a wave, and how to stand up, with plenty of time to practice our new found skills before the end of the lesson. Those already familiar may wish to have a refresher, or just spend some time in the waves with a hired board.

The afternoon is ours to spend as we please. We can spend some time at our lovely hotel, perhaps spending the afternoon by the pool, or maybe at the beach, or exploring our locale. There are spa treatments available at the hotel (some kid friendly options also available), which are bookable on the day.

Our final morning in Bali means one last delicious breakfast at our beach hotel before saying our goodbyes to the group and guides, and making our way to the airport. There will be a single timed transfer to meet with the group flight departure. The transfer takes approximately 1 hour 15 mins.

Travelling to your Destination

If flying from the UK there are low cost airlines available to the start and from the end of your holiday.

To benefit from full financial protection, ease your holiday planning, and avoid dealing with airlines, we can book scheduled flights from the UK as part of a flight inclusive package. Scheduled flights are usually more expensive that low cost alternatives, however potentially less stressful if your flight is cancelled or delayed. If you book flights through KE Adventure Travel we will offset the carbon of your flight.

The group will meet at the hotel in Ubud.

A single timed transfer from Denpasar (Bali) International Airport to the group hotel is provided. This is timed for the group flights from London. There are several flight options, but the favourable option appears to be a morning departure from the UK arriving in Bali approx. the same time the following day (day 1 of the itinerary). Return flights depart in the evening of the last day of the itinerary, arriving in the UK the following morning.

Please note arrival and departure times can vary with departure date - please check before making arrangements.

Anyone may join the group transfers by prior arrangement. Travelling as a group or on public transport saves energy. If this is not practical, we can provide private transfers at an additional cost. Taxis are also available.

All breakfasts, 9 lunches and 3 evening meals are included in the price of the trip.

Special Diets

Whilst we can cater for vegetarians, albeit sometimes with a more limited choice, we cannot always provide for special diets. Due to the nature of some of the trips that we operate and the countries in which we operate them, it can be very hard (and sometimes impossible) to cater for a wide range of dietary choices and you may have to supplement your meals with food/snacks from home. If you have specific dietary requirements please do speak to our sales team and they will be able to advise you whether or not we will be able to offer your specific choice. Please note that we are unable to provide separate menus and cannot accept liability for any problems arising from special dietary requirements or intolerances.

Food & Water

Drinking Water

It is not recommended to drink untreated water from the taps. If you are on a trekking or cycling holiday, water is supplied to fill up your individual bottles. This will be boiled, filtered or provided in large jerry cans or 5 litre bottles. Additionally you should take purification tablets or a filter bottle (such as a Water-To-Go bottle) to treat your water when in towns or where water is not supplied. We do not encourage the purchasing of single use plastic bottles.

Breakfasts will mostly be continental hotel style with plenty of fresh fruit, and the usual breads, cereals, yogurts etc. Lunches will be taken as picnic pack ups, and in the evenings we mostly eat out. Preferences of all varieties should be well catered for in the busy downtown areas of most places we visit, be it traditional Balinese fare, or international dishes common across the globe, so even the fussiest of palates should find something to appease.

Rice is the basis of nearly all Indonesian dishes and is usually served with fish, chicken, or vegetables. Food can range from mild to fiery hot - so take note of the spice on ordering, and always ask if you’re not sure. Three traditional dishes, nasi goreng and mie goreng (fried rice and fried noodles), and gado gado (a tofu salad with thick peanut dressing) can be found everywhere and are a fantastic introduction to the flavours of Indonesia.

Accommodation

We will stay in small, independent guesthouses and carefully selected hotels that are all family or community operated. Whilst in Komodo we stay for a night onboard a sleeping boat with cabins that sleep four in two bunk beds. Family, double, twin and triple configured rooms are available in most accommodations otherwise, subject to availability. We will work with your rooming requests to meet your requirements as closely as possible.

Internal flights

There is a short internal flight on this trip from Denpasar (Bali) to Labaun Bajo which should last approximately 70 minutes.

Please note that poor weather can cause delays on internal flights. If your internal flights are cancelled, you will spend an extra night near the airport and depart when safe to do so. Our guides will do the best they can to adjust the itinerary to fit around the altered schedule. In the majority of departures this is not an issue, but please be aware that this is still a possibility.

Group Leader & Support Staff

The group will be led by professional and qualified, English speaking tour leaders. On our days within the national park we will be joined by professional wildlife guides to guide us through the park.

Spending Money

Approximately £200-250 per person (or equivalent in US dollars or Euros) should be allowed for tips, soft drinks, snacks, non-included meals and miscellaneous expenses. Alcoholic drinks, souvenirs and optional activities are additional so you may wish to budget for these. You can choose to take your money in your home currency, or change before you travel. There will be the opportunity to change money into local currency on arrival at the airport and your local leader will advise the best places to change money en-route. Additionally, you will be able to get currency from bank ATMs in some of the towns that we will visit. Credit cards are useful, especially for the optional activities, and it is also a good idea to carry one in case of emergency.

Guidance on Tipping

Tipping is the accepted way of saying ‘thank you’ to you leader and local team. Tipping is entirely voluntary and should be dependent on good service. We advise you to tip as a group.

Baggage Allowance

For this holiday you should take one piece of luggage and a daypack. Luggage with wheels is useful for this holiday. For international flights please check your baggage allowance with your airline.

Passport & Visas

The information that we provide is for UK passport holders.

A passport with 6 months remaining validity at the end of your stay is generally required, and you should have at least 2 blank pages for each country that you visit.

For other nationalities, please refer to your own Government website for the latest information.

It is your responsibility to ensure that you have the correct travel documents including vaccinations and health certificates (see Health & Vaccinations below), and visas for your holiday. Please ensure that you check the FCDO for the latest advice for each country visited before travel.

Visa Indonesia

A visa valid for up to 30 days can be obtained free on arrival if entering and exiting Indonesia through certain airports (note that Lombok is not currently included). If you intend to stay longer than 30 days, you must check visa requirements with the Indonesian Embassy before travel.

From 1 September 2025, all international travellers must complete the All Indonesia Digital Arrival Card before departure (from 3 days prior up to the day of travel). This new online form replaces previous paper customs and health declarations and simplifies the arrival process.

Travellers can register via the official website https://allindonesia.imigrasi.go.id/

or through the mobile app (available on Google Play and App Store). Once submitted, a QR code will be generated, which should be saved (a screenshot is fine) and presented to immigration officers upon arrival.

Note: The Digital Arrival Card is separate from the Visa on Arrival process and the Bali Tourist Levy, which remain distinct requirements.

Health & Vaccinations

Vaccinations:

You should be up to date with the routine vaccinations recommended in the UK for overseas travel.

You must also contact your doctor or travel clinic to check if there are specific vaccinations or other preventive measures that you need for the area you are visiting, in good time before you are due to depart.

On holidays to more remote areas you should also have a dental check-up.

It is your responsibility to ensure that you have the correct travel documents including vaccinations and health certificates.

Severe Allergies:

If you have a severe allergy please inform the KE office before you travel. We will do all we can to help, but we cannot guarantee an allergy free environment on KE trips.

Currency

The unit of currency in Indonesia is the Indonesian Rupiah (IDR)

Preparing for your Holiday

Getting some additional exercise before coming on an active holiday makes a lot of sense. The fitter you are, after all, the more enjoyable you will find the experience. You should be comfortable with walking 2 to 4 hours for consecutive days. Even the youngsters will benefit from some kind of fun, outdoor activity ahead of your holiday. Running, cycling and swimming will all help.

Climate

We only run departures for this trip during the Bali and Komodo dry season, Late March/April through October, where the temperature is warm but stable and manageable around 25-30 degrees centigrade. It is regularly sunny and there is minimal rain. Outside of these months the temperature climbs into the 30’s resulting in regular downpours and thunderstorms, which is less predictable for our activities.

Travel Aware

The 'Travel Aware' website provides a single, authoritative source of advice for all kinds of travellers and we recommend that before travel, all KE clients visit the official UK Government website at travelaware.campaign.gov.uk and read the FCDO Travel Advice for their chosen destination. North Americans can also check out the U.S. Department of State website: www.travel.state.gov for essential travel advice and tips.

KE treat the safety and security of all clients as the most important aspect of any trip we organise. We would not run any trip that we did not consider reasonably safe. Should the FCDO advise against travel for any reason, we will contact everyone booked to travel to discuss the situation. Travel Insurance

It is an essential condition of joining a holiday with KE Adventure Travel that you have a valid travel insurance policy to cover the cost of medical treatment and to protect the value of your holiday in the event of cancellation. When taking out insurance please ensure the policy you choose covers you for the activities and altitude included in your itinerary.

Equipment List

Please try to keep the weight of your baggage to a minimum. See the ‘baggage allowance’ section for further details.

You SHOULD bring the following items:

• Lightweight hiking boots / Approach shoes / Trainers

• Sandals (to be used in kayaking as well)

• Shirts / T-shirts / Tops

• Lightweight trousers

• Shorts / Skirt

• Socks & Underwear

• Fleece jacket or warm jumper

• Lightweight waterproof overtrousers

• Lightweight waterproof jacket

• Buff

• Sunhat

• Warm hat

• Sunglasses

• Daypack 20 - 30 litres (Depending on how much of the kids stuff you will be carrying). Note you will need your daypack to take your overnight belongings for the trip to Komodo.

• Headtorch and spare batteries

• Small towel

• Swimwear

• Water bottles 1 Litre x2 (we encourage re-filling water bottles rather than single use plastic)

• Water purification tablets

• Washbag and toiletries

• Sun protection (including lips)

• Antibacterial handwash

• Basic First Aid Kit, including: Antiseptic cream, throat lozenges, diarrhoea treatment (Imodium), painkillers, plasters and blister treatment, Insect repellent, and re-hydration salts (Dioralite). Glucose tablets and multi-vitamin tablets are also a good idea.

The following items are optional:

• Pen-knife (note: always pack sharp objects in hold baggage)

• Camera

• Games / books etc

• Reusable cloth bag for shopping (to avoid plastic bags)
