Our Holiday Grades Explained

To show the relative difficulty of our holidays, each trip is graded on a scale of 1 to 12, with 12 being the most challenging. Although we have tried to make our grading system as clear as possible, it cannot take into account your personal interests, abilities or experience. If you have any questions about the nature of a particular trip or its suitability for you, please read the 'Is this holiday for you?' section or contact us.

1 - 3 LEISURELY

Suitable for most people in good health, holidays at this grade include only limited amounts of activity.

Holidays where the focus is 3-4 days of activities or short walks, or wildlife, sightseeing. The family should have a sense of adventure and fun to enjoy these holidays.

For anyone who enjoys exploring on foot rather than always in a vehicle. A mixture of sightseeing and easier walking of around 2-5hrs a day. Walking paths could be around sites, through cities or on well marked trails and at lower altitudes (under 2500m). Regions are rarely flat so some ascent or descents could be expected but rarely above around 300 – 400m per day.

4 - 6 MODERATE

Suitable for reasonably fit individuals, such as regular walkers and cyclists. There can be the occasional more difficult day.

Suitable for fitter families who enjoy the outdoors and are capable and enjoy walking for at least 2 consecutive days, and maybe a night camping. There can be the occasional more challenging day.

Suitable for fit weekend walkers. Consecutive walking days, of around 4-8 hours on generally good paths. Ascents and descents will increase and could be 1000m+ but often less. Some walking may be at higher altitude (3000m – 4500m) with the occasional higher pass and you may have some walking on snow. There may be occasions where you have to carry overnight kit on one or two days.

7 - 9 CHALLENGING

Physically challenging holidays, where you need to be prepared before you go.

Previous trekking experience and a good level of fitness is required for these trips as there will be consecutive days of longer trekking in more remote areas with rougher paths. Days will be around 5-9 hours often with some steep ascents and descents. Some ice/snow trekking is possible with the use of crampons and/ice axe. You may be required to carry a heavier backpack with overnight essentials or equipment for some days and sleeping at higher altitudes (generally up to 5000m).

Overview

This fascinating family mini-trek trip is all about getting under the skin of Berber life in the Atlas Mountains. From the hustle and bustle of Imlil and Marrakech to the quiet paths and olive groves that wind their way up and over the Atlas Mountains, this is a trip of contrasts.

We’ll start our trip in the epicentre of mountain life, Imlil. One night here is plenty to absorb the familiar sights and sounds of climbers and mountaineers heading out on their quest to reach the summit of Mount Toubkal, the highest mountain in North Africa. From here, we head out on a three day mini-trek into the quieter reaches of the mountain range experiencing Berber life, staying in intimate gites and meeting the people that call these mountains home. After three days on trek, we reach the lush green valley of Ouirgane, and our rest day retreat, surrounded by fruit trees and olive groves. After a day by the pool or perhaps taking part in an optional cookery class, we will rejoin the melee of Moroccan city life in Marrakech. We have a day here to enjoy the labyrinthine souks and squares before our departure.

This mini-trek adventure is for active families who are used to hillwalking and want to experience first hand what life is like in the Atlas Mountains. The trek follows well-trodden but sometimes unmade paths with some steep and rocky hillsides. There are hundreds of metres of ascent and descent each day and, although the trek lasts just three days, walks may be up to 6-8 hours per day, including stops. There will be plenty of rest and convenience stops and we'll enjoy a picnic out on the hill on each trek day.

Day 1

Arrival & Transfer to Imlil.

Upon arrival at Marrakech airport, you will be met and transferred (1hr - 90mins) to the mountain village of Imlil nestled high in the Atlas Mountains. The scenic drive offers a first glimpse of some of Morocco's most dramatic landscapes. Once in Imlil, you can relax at our comfortable riad accommodation, explore the village of Imlil at the foot of Mount Toubkal and cradled by her and her imposing mountain neighbours in the heart of the Atlas Mountains. You'll want to take it easy this evening and get an early night ahead of our following days trekking.

Day 2

Mini trek day one, Imlil to Tizi Oussem.

We'll wake to a traditional breakfast in the riad this morning. Expect fresh breads, thin pancakes called m'semen usually served with amlou, a locally made almond butter, honey, jam and butter and sometimes harissa and olives too. There is also usually some yogurt, cream cheese, an egg, coffee and tasty Moroccan mint and green tea to accompany the feast. After filling up on our tasty breakfast our trek begins with a walk westward through picturesque valleys and traditional Berber villages. We'll take our time to explore as we go, learning about the crops the locals tend to here, and spotting the wildlife as we ascend the hillsides. You'll pass terraced fields and walnut groves, gradually gaining altitude up over Tizi Mzzik pass (2455m), the high point of our three day trek, where we'll take lunch. In the afternoon we descend into the charming village of Tizi Oussem. This classic up and over route is a great introduction to the beauty and simple living of the Berber people who live amongst these imposing mountains. We'll aim to arrive at the gite in the mid afternoon with time to unwind before dinner.

Day 3

Mini trek day two, Tizi Oussem to Imi Oughlad.

This morning we'll wake in our intimate gite accommodation and have breakfast overlooking more incredible mountain views. We're a whole valley away from the mountaineering hub of Imlil now, so today will feel much quieter and connected to local life as we move steadily through this beautiful landscape. Our route takes us across a scenic mountain pass via Berber villages perched on the hillsides such as Ait Aissa and Taddart, each affording breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding valleys. The trek is slightly more challenging today, but the reward is worth the work as we traverse remote landscapes and experience authentic rural life. We'll have lunch on or near the top of the Tizi n Tacht pass before descending for two or so hours to reach our next village checkpoint of Imi Oughlad. The rest of the day is ours to spend at the gite or exploring the quiet berber village of Imi Oughlad. We'll enjoy dinner here and settle down early again before our final trekking day tomorrow.

Day 4

Mini trek day three, Imi Oughlad to Ouirgane.

After another tasty and filling traditional berber breakfast we continue our journey towards the Ouirgane Valley. We start with a gradual ascent through the forest at Albayoud. We will stop here for lunch in the shade of the juniper trees before descending gradually via Tinzert village into the lush Ouirgane Valley. The scenery changes noticeably here, with greener landscapes, olive groves, and a milder climate. We'll arrive at our cosy eco-lodge in the mid-afternoon sunshine with time to play in the pool or relax on the sun terrace with a good book before dinner at the lodge, marking the end of our mini-trekking adventure.

Day 5

Day at Leisure at the lodge in Ouirgane.

Today is the day to rest, recuperate and reminisce about the last three excellent days on the trail. We've crossed multiple mountain passes of the Atlas mountain range and explored some of the beautiful and lesser-known valleys of this incredible mountain range. We may choose to spend the day playing in the pool, enjoying the sun terrace and sipping slow cups of mint tea, or if we still have some energy to burn off, there are more circular hikes that we can head out on, on a self-guided basis. This afternoon there is also an optional cooking class where local hosts will show us how to prepare traditional Moroccan dishes, before enjoying a feast of our own creation to finish. This costs 40€ and is arranged and paid for locally with your guide.

Day 6

Transfer to Marrakech and free afternoon in the city.

After a final breakfast in the mountains we board the transfer bound for Marrakech. Our drive takes us down and out of the mountains and back towards the flatter lands of mid Morocco before eventually reaching the sprawling outskirts of Marrakech. We will be transported into the heart of this great city and to our riad for the final night, within the ancient city walls and within walking distance of the Koutoubia and the city's beating heart, the Jemaa el Fnaa. This afternoon is free for us to explore this vibrant city, from its bustling souks and intimate squares, to its historic landmarks and verdant parks, offering a lively contrast to the calm mountain experiences of the days before. We have dinner independently this evening at our own expense before retiring to our comfortable riad beds for our final night in Morocco.

Travelling to your Destination

If flying from the UK there are low cost airlines available to the start and from the end of your holiday.

To benefit from full financial protection, ease your holiday planning, and avoid dealing with airlines, we can book scheduled flights from the UK as part of a flight inclusive package. Scheduled flights are usually more expensive that low cost alternatives, however potentially less stressful if your flight is cancelled or delayed. If you book flights through KE Adventure Travel we will offset the carbon of your flight.

Join in Marrakech. You’ll be met at Marrakech Menara Airport on day 1 of the land-only itinerary and transferred to your first-night accommodation in Imlil, approximately 90 minutes from the airport. Transfers will be arranged according to individual flight arrival times and may be shared with other members of the group arriving at a similar time.

Meal Plan

6 breakfasts, 5 lunches and 5 dinners are included. This equates to all meals whilst in the mountains, but breakfasts only when in Marrakech to allow you to eat out and enjoy the city to it’s fullest. Dinners can still be taken at the Riad if pre-arranged with the staff on arrival.

Special Diets

Whilst we can cater for vegetarians, albeit sometimes with a more limited choice, we cannot always provide for special diets. Due to the nature of some of the trips that we operate and the countries in which we operate them, it can be very hard (and sometimes impossible) to cater for a wide range of dietary choices and you may have to supplement your meals with food/snacks from home. If you have specific dietary requirements please do speak to our sales team and they will be able to advise you whether or not we will be able to offer your specific choice. Please note that we are unable to provide separate menus and cannot accept liability for any problems arising from special dietary requirements or intolerances.

Food & Water

Drinking Water

It is not recommended to drink untreated water from the taps. If you are on a trekking or cycling holiday, water is supplied to fill up your individual bottles. This will be boiled, filtered or provided in large jerry cans or 5 litre bottles. Additionally you should take purification tablets or a filter bottle (such as a Water-To-Go bottle) to treat your water when in towns or where water is not supplied. We do not encourage the purchasing of single use plastic bottles.

Moroccan cuisine is amongst the best in the world and our meals cooked by our Berber hosts or are taken in a range of restaurants and other eateries. A traditional Moroccan breakfast is largely continental style with a few extras. Expect tea and coffee, orange juice, m’semen (thin square pancakes), bread, amlou (almond butter), jam, honey, egg, soft cheese and olives. It’s a feast of small plates. A typical Moroccan dinner menu begins with a simple selection of mezze, which might include a bowl of olives or a selection of cooked vegetable salads dressed with olive oil, sprinkled with cumin and served with a dip and flat bread. The tagine or roast meat (or vegetable) dish comes next, served with couscous and often a salad. There will be some meat (usually chicken, lamb or beef). Meat although present, is not particularly prominent in the menu. All dishes come with traditional sauces which are rarely (spicy) hot. A simple plate of prepared fresh fruit or dessert marks the end of the meal, before the mint tea is served.

For our picnic lunches on the trekking days, these will be packed lunches, prepared locally and suitable for eating during the trek. They will typically include a selection of sandwiches or Moroccan bread, cheese, tuna/chicken or another protein filling, salad/vegetables, fruit, and a small snack or sweet item. In the hotels and restaurants in towns it is also usually possible to get more western types of food such as chips and pizzas (for less adventurous palettes). Boiled or reverse osmosis treated water is provided when staying at the riads and lodge. You will be able to fill your personal water bottles from these. In the gites, we recommend using a water filter or water purification tablets.

We will be staying in a variety of comfortable traditional accommodations on this trip, including lodges, gites, and riads.

At Ouirgane, at the end of our trek, we will stay in comfortable lodges with traditional features and generous rooms. The public areas consist of a salon for sitting and eating, and external terraces with lots of soft cushions and seating. There is also an unheated splash pool for our enjoyment and relaxation.

In the mountains at Tizi Oussem and Imi Oughlad, we will stay in gites which are more basic and more akin to a guesthouse but still pleasant and comfortable.

In Imlil and Marrakech at the beginning and end of our trip we will stay in riads. These beautiful, large mansion style houses are designed around a central courtyard feature with balconies looking inwards. In Marrakech there is a small splash pool at it’s heart, surrounded by luscious houseplants. In Imlil, whilst there is no pool, there is instead a large roof terrace with incredible views of the mountains that cradle the village.

Group Leader & Support Staff

An experienced and English speaking local guide will lead us through the mountains from Imlil to Ouirgane. We will be left to explore independently in Marrakech at the end of the trip.

Spending Money

Approximately £100 per family member should suffice for miscellaneous expenses, including tips for the crew, drinks and modest souvenirs. Marrakech is a great place for souvenir buying. If you are intending to buy expensive items, you should budget accordingly and you may wish to pay by credit card. It is not necessary to purchase Moroccan currency (Dirham) outside the country. You can withdraw money in local currency from ATM’s in Marrakech. Credit cards can be used to purchase goods and it is a good idea to carry one in case of emergency.

Guidance on Tipping

Tips are the accepted way of saying ‘thank you’ to your local guides and porters. They do not form part of their wages. KE always pays local crews the best rates of pay, no matter what country they are in and any tips they receive are seen as a personal thank you from group members. For our part, we advise local teams that tips are not a duty or a prerequisite but are a bonus and entirely dependent on the service that was given. For your trek crews we recommend that you give a tip if you feel that their services have met your satisfaction. As a rough guide we suggest you allow a total of €100-150 per family of four for tipping.

Baggage Allowance

For this holiday you should take one piece of luggage (per person), which should be a soft bag, and a daypack. Whilst on trek, your bag will be driven between overnight locations, and soft bags will take up significantly less space in the transfer vehicle than solid suitcases. For international flights please check your baggage allowance with your airline.

UK and USA passport holders do not require a visa for short stays.

Health & Vaccinations

Vaccinations:

You should be up to date with the routine vaccinations recommended in the UK for overseas travel.

You must also contact your doctor or travel clinic to check if there are specific vaccinations or other preventive measures that you need for the area you are visiting, in good time before you are due to depart.

Please ensure you are looking at the recommendations for all countries visited on your holiday plus recommendations for any borders you cross.

On holidays to more remote areas you should also have a dental check-up.

It is your responsibility to ensure that you have the correct travel documents including vaccinations and health certificates.

If you have a severe allergy please inform the KE office before you travel. We will do all we can to help, but we cannot guarantee an allergy free environment on KE trips.

Currency

The unit of currency in Morocco is the Moroccan Dirham.

Climate

It is hot in Marrakech in the summer months. Temperatures in Marrakech might reach up to 40ºC, dropping to around 25ºC at night. Once we are on trek and we start to gain height, we can expect the temperatures to be rather lower, with daytime temperatures around 2000 – 2500m (the high point of our trek) being around 25ºC. The weather is usually fine at the time of our scheduled departures. However, weather in mountainous areas is notoriously difficult to predict, and rain or even short-lived storms can occur at any time of the year and you must be prepared for extremes of climate.

Travel Aware

As a reputable tour operator, KE supports the British Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office's ‘Travel Aware’ campaign to enable British citizens to prepare for their journeys overseas. The 'Travel Aware' website provides a single, authoritative source of advice for all kinds of travellers and we recommend that before travel, all KE clients visit the official UK Government website at travelaware.campaign.gov.uk and read the FCDO Travel Advice for their chosen destination. All other nationalities should check their government websites for relevant information.

KE treat the safety and security of all clients as the most important aspect of any trip we organise. We would not run any trip that we did not consider reasonably safe. Should the FCDO advise against travel for any reason, we will contact everyone booked to travel to discuss the situation. We receive regular updates directly from the FCDO and are in constant touch with our contacts on the ground. If you have any questions about government travel advice, please call our office.

The only stipulation for joining a family group holiday is that 1 party member is 17yrs or under, and they are accompanied by an adult. An average group size is around 10 members in total.
