In the Northern Hemisphere, the month of August marks a time of vibrant diversity and dynamic climates across the continents of Asia, Europe, and North America. In Asia, the landscape is a tapestry of lush greenery, with monsoon rains nourishing the rice paddies of Southeast Asia and creating a vibrant spectacle of life. In Europe, August signifies the height of summer, as cities across the continent bask in warm sunshine, and the diverse countryside beckons travellers from around the world to enjoy trekking and walking holidays. Meanwhile, in Northern America, August is a month of contrasts, where the bustling energy of urban centres harmonises with the tranquillity of natural landscapes, creating a rich and varied experience for inhabitants and visitors alike.

In the Southern Hemisphere, August unfolds as a distinctive chapter marked by the onset of late winter and the promise of spring in both Africa and Latin America. Across the vast landscapes of Africa, countries experience a diverse range of weather patterns. In the southern regions, like South Africa and Botswana, August may bring cool temperatures and occasional rainfall, while closer to the equator, countries like Kenya and Tanzania continue to experience a mix of dry and wet conditions. In Latin America, August heralds the transition from winter to spring. As the southern hemisphere awakens to the blossoming of flowers and the emergence of new life, cities come alive with outdoor events and festivities, celebrating the arrival of warmer days. Further North, countries such as Bolivia and Peru experience crisp, clear skies during this month, creating a tapestry of experiences for those exploring this region during this time of the year.

Around Svalbard & Kvitoya

In August, Svalbard experiences its brief summer, characterised by milder temperatures and the enchanting phenomenon of the Midnight Sun, where daylight persists around the clock. This is a prime time to witness wildlife, including polar bears, and explore the stunning Arctic landscapes under the continuous Arctic daylight. Embark on a ten-day cruise circling Svalbard, with an added visit to the remote eastern island of Kvitoya. This cruise includes exploring glaciers, discovering the history of Ny Alesund, and encountering diverse wildlife, from sunbathing walruses to polar bears. Travel aboard purpose-built expedition vessels, the M/V's Plancius, Ortelius, and Hondius, accommodating up to 108 travellers. Mount Meru and Kilimanjaro Summit Ascents

Embark on a thrilling adventure with our double-peak holiday, starting with an acclimatising trek to the summit of Mount Meru (4566m) before tackling Africa's highest peak, Kilimanjaro (5895m). The ascent of Mount Meru, a beautiful 4-day trek through game-filled parkland, bamboo forest, and moorland, not only serves as a worthy objective but ensures optimal acclimatisation for increased summit success. Following this, our picturesque six-day trek up the Machame route on Kilimanjaro takes us through the Shira Plateau, Lava Tower, and Great Barranco Wall, culminating in a memorable ascent to the 'Roof of Africa' at Stella Point. Witnessing the sunrise from the summits of both Meru and Kilimanjaro promises an unforgettable experience. In August, Tanzania experiences mild temperatures and clear skies, making it an ideal time to attack Mount Meru and Kilimanjaro. The dry season enhances the trekking conditions, allowing adventurers to enjoy the stunning landscapes and achieve summit success on both of these iconic peaks.

 

 

Traverse of Bolivia's Cordillera Real

Spanning 120 kilometres from Wara Warani in the north to the Chucura Valley in the south, the Cordillera Real is a breathtaking mountain range boasting numerous peaks, six of which exceed 6000 metres. This three-week trekking expedition, exploring the southern part of this regal range, is a true classic, traversing high trails and crossing passes at altitudes of over 5000 metres. The journey offers a diverse array of scenery, from alpine valleys with picturesque lakes and snow-capped Andean peaks to scattered Quechua villages. Before embarking on the trek, there's time to explore La Paz, the world's highest capital city, and acclimate beside Lake Titicaca, visiting Copacabana and spending a night in an ecolodge on Isla de Sol, renowned for its Inca temples and pathways. Bolivia, the jewel in the Andean crown, captivates with its spectacular landscapes, rich history, and the warm hospitality of its people, making it a standout destination in South America. In August, Bolivia experiences its dry season, offering clear skies and pleasant temperatures for exploration. 



Hunza, Shimshal and the Rush Lake Trek

In August, Pakistan typically sees warm temperatures and varied weather conditions, making it an opportune time to explore the country's cultural richness, historical sites, and diverse landscapes, from the mountainous regions to the vibrant cities. To the north of the regional capital and former Silk Road trading post, lies the enchanting Hunza Valley, granting access to the Karakoram Mountains' wonders in Northern Pakistan. This adventure introduces travellers to secluded villages, ancient forts, historic towns, the newly-formed Attabad Lake, colossal glaciers, and majestic snow-capped peaks, all without the need for an extensive trek. Commencing in Karimabad, the journey includes visits to the historic Baltit Fort and breakfast at the renowned Eagle’s Nest Hotel, providing a stunning overview of the Hunza Valley dominated by Rakaposhi (7788m). A scenic ferry ride along the Attabad Lake and a drive to the traditional Wakhi village of Shimshal from Passu set the stage for day-hikes offering exceptional mountain views and aiding in fitness and acclimatisation. The week-long trek from Hopar to the rarely-visited Rush Lake (4694m) follows, perched on a high ridge between the Hispar Valley and Barpu Glacier. This alpine lake, one of the world's highest, offers a sensational panorama including Hunza peaks, Hispar La, Snow Lake, and Central Karakoram giants such as K2 (8611m), Broad Peak, and the Gasherbrums. Wild Costa Rica and Panama
