Our Holiday Grades Explained

To show the relative difficulty of our holidays, each trip is graded on a scale of 1 to 12, with 12 being the most challenging. Although we have tried to make our grading system as clear as possible, it cannot take into account your personal interests, abilities or experience. If you have any questions about the nature of a particular trip or its suitability for you, please read the 'Is this holiday for you?' section or contact us.

1 - 3 LEISURELY
1 - 3 LEISURELY

Suitable for most people in good health, holidays at this grade include only limited amounts of activity.

For occasional bike riders; these holidays are predominantly on paved roads and involve only gentle climbs. You can go at your own pace and there’s plenty of time off the bike, to explore and to take it easy. These leisurely journeys are normally on hybrid or electric bikes. Daily distances are usually between 25 and 50 kilometres.

Suitable for reasonably fit individuals, such as regular walkers and cyclists. There can be the occasional more difficult day.

These are holidays for weekend cyclists looking for a fun challenge. Mostly on paved roads, forest tracks and gravel paths, daily distances can be as much as 60 kilometres a day on an adventure cycling holiday and as much as 80 kilometres a day on a road cycling tour. Expect to encounter undulating terrain and the odd, longer, steeper climb.

Physically challenging holidays, where you need to be prepared before you go.

These holidays will provide a challenge for regular weekend cyclists. Adventure cycling holidays on mountain bikes at this level, can include anything from forest track riding, to technically challenging singletrack ascents and descents. These tours can be in isolated areas and/or at altitude, whilst Road Cycling tours in these grades will involve long (up to 100 kilometre) days and potentially very hilly terrain. A good level of fitness and regular training, including a couple of long days in the saddle each month, is standard for these trips.

Our toughest holidays, involving many long days, often in isolated areas. A high level of fitness and previous wilderness and mountain experience is essential.

We recommend these epic rides for experienced cyclists only, who relish the challenge of long, consecutive and potentially very hilly days on the bike. Adventure Cycling tours will be ‘out-there’ and sustained, whilst Road Cycling holidays in these grades can have continuous steep stages (up to 100 kilometres and 3000 metres of ascent) with some long and serious descents which require care. Demanding a high level of endurance, these holidays are aimed at regular sportive / club riders.

Just inland from Venice at the northern end of the Adriatic Sea, the Prosecco Hills are perfect for a self-guided cycle tour. Explore their breathtaking landscapes and cultural treasures on two wheels whilst immersing yourself in the Italian way of life here in the Veneto region. From your luxurious boutique hotel in Farra di Soligo, your rides allow you to discover the most beautiful areas that this UNESCO-recognised wine-growing region has to offer. This charming corner of Italy is as famous for its historical and architectural heritage as it is for its wine, with Prosecco being one of its best known.

During five days of relatively leisurely cycling you can enjoy gorgeous verdant views of a region that is surprisingly little-frequented by tourists. Your routes provide plenty of variety as they wind through vineyards and picturesque villages, and expansive landscapes along the Piave River. Along your way, be captivated by the unique charms, impressive architecture, magnificent old quarters and lively squares of historic towns such as Vittorio Veneto, Bassano del Grappa, Asolo, Valdobbiadene, and Conegliano. Taking each day’s ride at your own pace, there is plenty of time for you to explore this hilly landscape, stop for a caffè, and take in the sights. You’ll be cycling mostly on quiet side roads, some country roads with more traffic, and the occasional brief busier section. The routes are quite hilly in places, so remember you can upgrade to an e-bike if you’d prefer an extra boost!

Staying at the 4-star Hotel Villa Soligo you will be sure to have everything you need to relax after a day exploring on your bike, including a spa and outdoor seasonal pool, a terrace perfect for relaxing with a good book and a glass of the local wine, and an excellent restaurant where you can enjoy the local specialities.

Is this holiday for you?

This is an undulating tour of Veneto’s Prosecco Hills, with around 245km of cycling over 5 days mostly on paved routes. A daily average of around 50km, with the longest day just over 60km, combined with a maximum daily ascent and descent of around 650m, makes this trip relatively leisurely. Most of the cycling is on quiet side roads with little traffic, and some is on country roads with more traffic. Near larger towns and on connecting sections you can expect to encounter brief stretches with heavier traffic. With very comfortable centre-based 4-star accommodation, you will have everything you need to relax after your days out in the saddle. It is worth bearing in mind that most of the routes are quite hilly and there are some longer climbs, so if you would prefer an extra boost you can upgrade to an e-bike at a supplementary cost and make this holiday a bit more of a breeze.

After a delicious breakfast you leave your hotel at leisure to embark on your first ride of the week. Soon you are cycling through picturesque vineyards and gently rolling hills. After passing through Cèneda with its imposing Church of Santa Maria Assunta, you reach Vittorio Veneto. Its historic centre, Serravalle, makes for a fascinating visit and the Piazza Flaminio, with its historic palaces, arcades and fountain is a great place to pause and savour the moment. With Istrian stone paving and traditional Venetian-style architecture, this is a perfect place to stop for a refreshing drink and a bite to eat. Next, a winding road leads you to Tarzo and the picturesque village of Rolle, nestled amongst the Prosecco vineyards.

Today's ride begins with transfer to Bassano del Grappa, a lively town situated at the foot of the Alps and where your route begins. Take time to explore this captivating town with its historic old town, medieval city centre and its famous wooden bridge, the Ponte degli Alpini - the ultimate photo opportunity!

Afterwards, you will ride to Asolo, renowned for its winding alleys, elegant squares and the imposing Rocca that towers high above the old town. This really is one of the most beautiful places in Veneto! After this your route takes you to the Piave River, meandering along its gravel bed and beyond as you ride through diverse landscapes back to your hotel.

Today's ride begins at your hotel and, with a backdrop of the Prosecco Hills, first takes you through fertile plains peppered with vineyards and orchards to reach the Piave River. Heading on through rolling countryside and shady forests you arrive at Santa Maria della Vittoria with its pilgrim church.

Continuing on your way you might decide to stop at Nervesa della Battaglia and visit the ruins of its 11th-century Benedictine Sant'Eustachio Abbey, dramatically perched on a hill overlooking the Piave River. Built in around the year 800 it has suffered much damage over its long life; now partly restored it presents a magnificent blend of art and history.

Eventually you come to the impressive Castello di San Salvatore - dating from the 13th century it is one of the largest castles in Northern Italy. After cycling back to your hotel, it is time to relax and enjoy a well-earned evening meal and maybe a glass of the local wine!

Today you will explore the heart of the Prosecco region. Winding your way through its sea of grapevines dotted with charming villages, the views are simply breathtaking! Starting from your hotel, you ride through the villages of Combai, Guia, Santo Stefano, and San Pietro di Barbozza, all nestled among the vineyards.

Finally, you arrive at Valdobbiadene! This is a great spot to take a break and immerse yourself in its atmosphere steeped in wine tradition. Explore the lively Piazza Guglielmo Marconi and the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, and enjoy a caffè before hopping back on your bike. Cycling off through the sprawling vineyards and past wineries, you finally reach the little corner of paradise that is Col San Martino. The tiny church, Chiesa di San Vigilio, perched atop the hill above the town dates from the 10th century, and with such commanding views became an important lookout during the First World War. Next it is onwards to Soligo and your hotel, and time to relax.

Leaving your hotel, it is worth making a quick stop early on in Pieve di Soligo where the Soligo and Lierza rivers meet. Explore its elegant old town and the Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II, home to the 19th-century Vaccary Palace. You might even decide to have a little sweet treat and an espresso before heading on your way!

Your route continues through Collalto with its imposing castle, then on to Conegliano. Explore its enchanting historic centre and be captivated by the lively Contrada Grande (Via XX Settembre) lined with small Renaissance buildings. This is a world of porticoes and frescoes! As you make your way to the castle perched high above the town, be sure to stop off at the Sala dei Battuti and admire the particularly striking artworks that adorn its walls, and at the Duomo (cathedral) next door.

Next you cycle northwards through the gently rolling wine-growing countryside of Refrontolo - famous for the sweet red dessert wine Refrontolo Passito DOCG - to reach Molinetto della Croda. This picturesque 17th-century water mill situated at the foot of a small waterfall is like something out of a fairy tale, and has enchanted artists and visitors for centuries. Its museum also makes an interesting visit.

Your route continues through more vineyards and the tiny village of Rolle as it leads you back to your hotel. After another fascinating day out cycling, it is time to toast to your wonderful week of adventures on two wheels in the Prosecco Hills!

Lovely week of cycling, eating and wine ★★★★★

This was a lovely week of cycling in the Italian countryside, we really enjoyed riding through the pretty rural landscapes with the backdrop of the Tyrolean foothills, eating lots of delicious Italian food and sampling the local wines.
We changed the days around a little from the itinerary as described, to factor in the weather forecast and also the limited opening times of Villa Emo (entry included - totally worth the visit!). This worked really well, it was great to have the flexibility to ... do this. The only day of cycling that was set was the day when we were transferred with our bikes to Valdobbiane for the ride from the Prosecco Hills. We were thankful for having upgraded to e-bikes for the couple of climbs on this day!
We found a great winery very close to the route on the Piave River day - the family-run Anna Spinato Winery (www.spinato.it) - here we were welcomed by Anna and had a great time sampling some of her produce! Our panniers were a little heavier with a couple of bottles of their excellent Prosecco after this visit... we didn't book in advance, but it would be worth checking out their opening times online to time your visit (we found that many places shut around lunchtime so didn't manage many other winery visits over the week).
The hotel Relais Monaco was lovely, staff were friendly and welcoming, and we enjoyed the included tasting of the wines from their own vineyard! We also opted to enjoy the hotel spa one evening for a spot of relaxation.

Each self-guided holiday comes with comprehensive route notes and a map or pocket guidebook of the area you are exploring. The route notes contain information about the places you will visit and the local transport you might need, along with the detailed route notes for your daily walks or cycle rides. We even include some tips for the best places to stop for lunch.

You can expect to receive your Self-Guided Pack containing your route notes, a map or guidebook, and all your relevant documents, no later than 3 weeks before your holiday start-date. We will send your documents using a signed-for courier so that you can track your package and know that it is safely on its way to you. For bookings of more than 4 people we will send an additional Self-Guided Pack. If you do not need this additional pack please inform our Sales Team. Your pack will be sent to the lead booker, so please remind them to pack it before setting off.

Should your self-guided trip be part of a longer adventure requiring you to leave home more than three weeks before your holiday start-date, please inform our Sales Team so that we can make alternative delivery arrangements.

This holiday includes a GPS navigation app, which contains the routes for you to follow each day, as well as attractions, coffee stops and points of interest along the way. The app does not need to have Wi-Fi connection to work, you simply follow the instructions we provide you to download the app to your personal smartphone device before you leave home and you are ready to go.

While the travel app is running, your phone battery charge can be consumed faster than normal, so we strongly recommend that you pack a power bank with you just in case you require it.

Our Self-Guided Holidays are perfect for your next family holiday and are suitable for children of all ages.

Our partner hotels and accommodations are able to provide cots for young children, and some offer family rooms. We can also arrange hire of children’s bikes and tag along bikes for most of our self-guided cycling trips and with trips such as Lake Constance and the Danube offering routes on designated cycle paths you can rest assured in keeping your family safe.

As a parent we trust that you know your own child’s capabilities, so please read the itinerary details to ensure the distances covered each day are suitable for your family. If this is a first time walking or cycling holiday for your family, a centre-based trip is a fantastic option as it allows you to easily opt out of a day's walking if a day of building sand castles, swimming in the pool, or visiting museums is calling instead.

This trip starts and ends at Farra di Soligo, Veneto. All of our self-guided holidays are sold on a Land Only basis, allowing you the flexibility to choose the travel method that best suits you. The nearest airport for this trip is Venice Marco Polo Airport, which is well-served with many departures from UK regional airports.

If you are flying into Venice Marco Polo Airport, you can take the ATVO Airlink shuttle bus to Venezia Mestre railway station, then take the train to Conegliano (airport bus and train travel time approx. 1.5 hours, costs approx. €16pp, https://www.atvo.it/ and www.trenitalia.com). From Conegliano railway station you can take the Line 132 bus to Farra di Soligo, where your hotel is located around 200m from the nearest bus stop (bus takes approx. 30-40 minutes, costs approx. €5pp, https://mobilitadimarca.it/en/).

On departure, the steps above can simply be reversed.

This trip is on a bed and breakfast basis to allow you to choose between dining at the excellent hotel restaurant or to dine out at one of the local restaurants.

Whilst we can cater for vegetarians, albeit sometimes with a more limited choice, we cannot always provide for special diets.  Due to the nature of some of the trips that we operate and the countries in which we operate them, it can be very hard (and sometimes impossible) to cater for a wide range of dietary choices and you may have to supplement your meals with food/snacks from home.  If you have specific dietary requirements please do speak to our sales team and they will be able to advise you whether or not we will be able to offer your specific choice.  Please note that we are unable to provide separate menus and cannot accept liability for any problems arising from special dietary requirements or intolerances.

Water from the taps is perfectly drinkable on this holiday - please use this to fill your personal bottles for your daily activities. We do not encourage the purchase of single-use plastic bottles.

In Italy, food is a way of life; it brings families together, gives friends a reason to sit down and laugh, and showcases local produce. The Veneto region is no different, with a variety of local dishes to sample. Rice and polenta, as well as pasta, are popular staples in Veneto, and the local red chicory known as ‘radicchio rosso’ and the hard Grana Padano cheese feature prominently. Lamb, chicken, a distinctive local salami known as Sopressa, and seafood and fish from the nearby Adriatic Sea are also commonly found. The popular dessert, tiramisu, is said to have originated in Treviso as recently as 1970 and can be found on many à la carte menus in Veneto.

Lovingly renovated over the years, this magnificent villa oozes contemporary elegance and is surrounded by its own sprawling park - perfect for savouring every moment immersed in the Italian 'dolce vita'. Upgraded 'Bike Plus' bike hire is included in the cost of this holiday.

Upgraded bikes are lighter than standard hybrid bikes and have a crossbar for improved stiffness and stability, offering a sportier ride. Utilising higher-grade bike components such as hydraulic brakes and Shimano 20/27-speed gears, you can enjoy more precise handling and smoother gear changes. High-quality front suspension forks and a more athletic saddle offer increased comfort over a variety of surfaces and distances.

Upgraded bikes are available in the following frame sizes: 46 / 50 / 51 / 55 / 60 / 63 cm. These bikes are suitable for rider heights between approximately 155cm and 205cm.

All bikes come equipped with a pannier and handlebar bag for your daily essentials, plus a milometer, bike lock, pump, repair kit, and spare inner tube. Hire bikes do not come fitted with bottle cages as these impede with securing the bikes during transportation.

We strongly recommend that you bring your own helmet with you for the best comfort. We also recommend packing a gel seat for extra comfort or a pair of padded cycling shorts as whilst the cycling is leisurely and there are plenty of opportunities to stop and explore, it is always nice to have some padding for a more comfortable ride.

If you are looking for an extra boost whilst in the saddle, you can upgrade to an e-bike to make your ride more leisurely. Equipped with a battery and motor, these electric bikes give you a helping hand whilst you are pedalling, making it easier to climb hills and travel further with less effort and more comfort.

E-bikes have four different modes and an 8-speed internal gear hub with back-pedalling brake, along with disc brakes and front suspension. E-bikes are suitable for rider heights between approximately 148cm and 190cm.

E-bikes are available on this holiday at a supplement of £110 - please request this upgrade option from our Sales Team at the time of booking.

For this holiday one piece of luggage and a daypack should be sufficient for most people. Luggage with wheels is useful for this holiday. You will need the daypack to carry your daily essentials with you whilst you are out riding.

Europe

Your passport must meet 2 requirements. It must be:

  • less than 10 years old on the day you enter (check the ‘date of issue’)

  • valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave (check the ‘expiry date’)

A passport with 6 months remaining validity at the end of your stay is generally required, and you should have at least 2 blank pages for each country that you visit.

It is your responsibility to ensure that you have the correct travel documents including vaccinations and health certificates (see Health & Vaccinations below), and visas for your holiday. Please ensure that you check the FCDO for the latest advice for each country visited before travel.

Vaccinations:

You should be up to date with the routine vaccinations recommended in the UK for overseas travel.

You must also contact your doctor or travel clinic to check if there are specific vaccinations or other preventive measures that you need for the area you are visiting, in good time before you are due to depart.

Please ensure you are looking at the recommendations for all countries visited on your holiday plus recommendations for any borders you cross.

On holidays to more remote areas you should also have a dental check-up.

It is your responsibility to ensure that you have the correct travel documents including vaccinations and health certificates.

The currency for part or all of this holiday is the Euro.

The advantage of a self-guided cycling holiday is that you decide the pace. This trip is designed for leisure cyclists. Whilst it does not require you to be in peak fitness, the routes are fairly hilly and you should be comfortable cycling an average of 50km a day mostly on quiet rural roads with some short connecting sections on busier roads. It is a good idea to get some additional exercise before going on an active holiday and you should make sure you head out on a few rides before your trip. After all, the fitter you are the more enjoyable your cycling will be.

Northeastern Italy has a mid-European climate with cold winters and warm summers. Average daily temperatures in the lowlands of Veneto close to Venice range from around 18 degrees centigrade in April and October, to around 29 degrees centigrade in July. Throughout our season this is a predominantly sunny region with just a little rain each month.

As a reputable tour operator, KE supports the British Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office's ‘Travel Aware’ campaign to enable British citizens to prepare for their journeys overseas. The 'Travel Aware' website provides a single, authoritative source of advice for all kinds of travellers and we recommend that before travel, all KE clients visit the official UK Government website at travelaware.campaign.gov.uk and read the FCDO Travel Advice for their chosen destination. All other nationalities should check their government websites for relevant information.

KE treat the safety and security of all clients as the most important aspect of any trip we organise. We would not run any trip that we did not consider reasonably safe.  Should the FCDO advise against travel for any reason, we will contact everyone booked to travel to discuss the situation.  We receive regular updates directly from the FCDO and are in constant touch with our contacts on the ground.  If you have any questions about government travel advice, please call our office.

All of our self-guided holidays are sold on a Land Only basis allowing you the flexibility to choose the travel method which best suits you. You may even wish to make this holiday part of a bigger adventure or pair it with one of our other holidays. We can arrange additional nights' accommodation before or after your self-guided trip - please ask our Sales Team to find out more about this.

Our Sales Team will be happy to provide you with a quote for scheduled flights, or alternatively you may wish to book your own flights with a low cost carrier from your nearest regional airport.
